Interior Defense Weakness

We're expecting too much because the defensive tackles look vastly undersized? A few of them look like they're about 250 lbs
Vastly undersized? You sure about that?
Hobbs-290
Moi-305
Eason-315
West-290
Bailey-292
Robinson-300

Moi, Eason, Robinson and Bailey played the vast majority of the snaps Saturday. Hobbs (who is probably the best one) didn’t play.

My mistake. Moi got knocked out in the first series but his size doesn’t change. He ain’t 250 either.

Im glad Im not the only one who noticed. Look I know we were down 3 of our top 4 d-lineman. But we're just talking about size, not talent. If you arent at least 6' 2" and 300+, you have no business being an interior D-Lineman in the SEC. Why are we recruiting these undersized guys? Even our edge rushers look small compared to DE's in the past. Reggie White played DE at 280lbs. Derek Barnett was probably of similar size. Malik Jackson played at 275 lbs. Now these edge rushers look like basketball players.

The measurables might say that, but I know what I saw. I prefer the eye test to what it says in the program and right now we look small on the D-Line.

Don’t know where you guys are getting info that our interior D line is “undersized”. See two posts above for DT sizes. Smallest is 290 and Hobbs didn’t play.

Now it is true that the DE’s these days are smaller than they used to be but it’s that way a lot of places. Everybody wants those James Pierce edge rushers nowadays. 250 and lightning fast.

Eye test??? Yeah, you stay with that. 🤦‍♂️
Yeah, eye test. Last year, Omari Thomas, Omar Norman-Lott, Elijah Simmons, etc. They passed the eye test! They LOOKED like SEC interior D-linemen. Its not just about the weight, its body types and how you carry it. We are not recruiting enough beef on the d-line. We look like we recruited a bunch of edge rushers that we are desperately trying to convert into interior linemen. Where are the Henderson/Haynesworth body types? Where are the Dan Williams type guys? Or the Jesse Mahelonas?

Wallace definitely looks like he's a skill player that got overweight and moved to DT. Arms are small, gut is big.

Bailey looks the same as he always has. And hes good at SDE. Was overwhelmed at times at DT. Same with West, but they still produce...

Garner needs to tell Marion Dye that the path to get on the field soon is at DT. That kid can easily be 6'5" 300 lbs and still built like a LB

That would be an excuse if we had just hit the portal for a bunch of guys in our front 6. These are guys that have played for the same staff their entire college career though. Not sure if it was laziness or lack of S&C but they have to lock on QUICKLY. Because Georgia comes to town in 2 weeks and their rushing attack is going to be lethal this year
ETSU ran the ball well this week. 300+ on the ground. Granted it was Murray State, but they will probably try to do more of the same. We need healthy bodies on the d-line.

It looked like a lot of the Syracuse rushing yards came from off tackle plays.

We had injuries and guys out. Looked bad but once we have Jaxson moi in for more than 3 plays and Hobbs I’ll make an honest judgement. That Syracuse rb is no joke either he’s a very tough runner.
Hobbs out for Georgia. Moi questionable at this point

By the middle of the game, we were down 3 of our top 4 DT’s.
Hobbs- out before the game
Moi- out in first series
Eason- in and out all game with injuries

Hopefully will get them all back by Georgia.
Eason had 61 snaps

Or vanilla scheming. I tend to lean that way….
No, we just got whipped up front. Banks definitely dialed up some different pressures. Also “vanilla scheming” isn’t a thing in the season, and has always been a coping statement for what turns out to be a bad offense or defense. Coaches want to see their team execute the things they’ve worked on in a live game. Are they going to show the deepest parts of their “bag” in a game they’re a 2 TD favorite in? Likely not, but more or less you’re going to get what they’re going to run a majority of the season

Hell Nathan Robinson went into the tent too. Got the freshman a lot of playing time but that's one of the toughest positions on the field to contribute early. Their bodies just aren't big enough yet. They'll get there. Might as well get them some experience against a quality opponent when you know the game is already in the books

In defense of OP there was something weird about how they rotated in so many DT’s. Like they were holding open auditions for playing time. Some (or maybe all) of the freshman they played don’t seem to be ready
How are you gonna get ready if you don’t play? Gave up 100 yards rushing 2.3 per carry, not bad for a bunch of freshmen.

Arion Carter was injured in at least the third quarter.

The game has changed a lot in recent years this is not the same game as when John Henderson and Albert Haynesworth played. The super size gmo beef cows aren’t needed anymore. It’s become a horizontal game not north and south. Sec coaches have also complained how it’s very difficult to find many big boys in the trenches.

Well, based on the games I watched this weekend, Texas, OSU, Georgia, Miami, Clemson, FSU, Alabama, etc hasn't seemed to have trouble getting big uglies on the D-Line.

And you say its not a north and south game but thats exactly how Michigan won a natty in 2023. And we HAD the big beefy guys just last year in Lott, Simmons, and Thomas. We arent that far removed from the Henderson/Haynesworth era. If we face a team with an elite downhill running offense this year, we are screwed.

Not unless we get up on them by 17 points and their defense can’t stop our offense.

All kinds of ways to win a game.
