I’m not being a wise guy here, I don’t know what would motivate Putin to give up the fight and the territorial gains. While I might disagree with you about what our level of involvement in Ukraine should be, I do want Ukraine to prevail over Russia, I just don’t see it happening right now.

So, what should we offer that might actually end this conflict while being acceptable to both sides?

What should we willing to sacrifice to gain peace?

I don’t know what would be acceptable. Does giving “access” to Alaskan minerals mean selling them at market value? Maybe that is worth it for peace. Does it mean “giving” those minerals away, maybe not.

What do you think the offer should be?

Trump shouldn’t “offer” a damn thing it isn’t our responsibility to buy him off. And after this long why would you assume Putin is interested in anything less than conquering Ukraine?

First off I called something similar to this a few pages back.

Second off this is idiocy and Trump is an incompetent moron if he agrees to give up any US resources or assets to end this.

I am not assuming anything about Putin. I am just responding to a post citing an article about things Trump might "offer" Putin. Got me thinking about what, exactly, might it take to end this conflict.

I don't see it ending without some concession that Putin can advertise as a "win." I was asking for suggestions as to what the original poster thought was a reasonable trade off in order to end this conflict.

If we are going to be involved, (which we clearly have been and continue to be), I'd rather use Nye's "soft power" in order to position ourselves best for the future.

If "giving access" to rare Earth minerals in Alaska means letting Russia buy some, I don't see why that is such a huge problem if it ended the war. Would give Putin something to parade around to the Russian people and we can use the cash.

So, what do people actually expect out of this? They will meet at 11:30 local time (3:30 EST) and then have a lunch and a press conference. Remember, Trump is set to meet with him one on one (with interpreters). Knowing Trump as we all do, I suspect this means he expects some significant agreement to be reached, and he's looking forward to being able to promote that he, and he alone, could manage it. I don't think he would set this up if it wasn't already pretty much a done deal.
