Official Gramps' Memorial Eternal OT Thread

Nor have I. Didnt see the thread in the FF. Guess weve got time though til season starts. No idea what our offense is gonna look like...but I expect our defense will punch Syracuse in the mouth. Nobody scored a TD in the 1st half against our defense last year until almost November. It was game 7 IIRC. Our Dline is gonna be one of the best in the SEC again. They don't score 21 points on us IMO. How many points we can muster is anyones guess ...

You mean rushing TD right?

Legitimate complaint. Has been an issue since CJH got here...and I love Coach Hype. All of our WR production has come from the portal except Hyatt and Keyton. All of it. Seriously. This staff has yet to recruit a WR and develop them into SEC starter talent. That has to change this season or we need to get rid of Pope...who has been an incredible recruiter the past 2 seasons. The 2025 and 26 WRs he has landed are monsters in HS. Just unstoppable athletes. He has to show that he can coach these guys into producers. Matthews and Staley need to produce THIS year. No excuses. They are both incredible HS athletes that UGA and Bama wanted etc. Matthews will start outside and Staley in the slot. Those guys need to produce this year or we will struggle mightily in the passing game and end up running 2 TEs most of the time IMO. Smith is a big 6ft4in kid that by all accounts was a standout in the spring. He will see playing time outside this year too. We are so thin that all these guys will see the field IMO. We are loaded at the Slot WR position and razor thin outside though which is a problem. After the 2 deep outside we are using walk-ons which is crazy in the SEC. We cleaned out the entire WR room though in the off season so it kinda is what it is. Time for Pope to sink or swim. I really hope he does well though, because the 3 WRs we have committed for 2026 are incredible and that room could be one of the best in the country in a year or 2. As long as we can retain our talent and not lose them to the portal anyway. This staff has done a really good job retaining the guys that they want though compared to other SEC schools IMO.
Squirrel was pretty dang good. Tilman pretty infinitely increased his production under heupel. Heck even his injury shortened senior year was a good bit of production, far more than pre Heupel.

And i think you have to give them some credit for at least some of the transfer success. Velus and Bru didn't have a ton of production before joining us. Thornton was pretty good before he got here, but his senior year was more productive than the two years he was at Oregon combined.

We are a rushing offense. I know people get distracted by Hooker's 2022 season, but we have always been a run first offense under Heupel. Everything in this offense is about setting up the run. Even the deep shots are designed to keep safetys 10+ yards from the LOS. And even if we are 1/10 on them it's worth it to the offense just because of the set up.

We are having a debate while driving back home.

How much more does driving in traffic suck compared to normal driving?

Obviously 30 minutes of driving in traffic sucks more than 30 minutes of normal driving. But at what point does it balance out? 2:1? 3:1?

I was basing my argument on time. But mileage could also be used.

Personally I wouldn't do a 2:1 trade, my time is more valuable than my frustration of stop and go. I landed somewhere in the 1.25:1 or 1.33:1 range.

I agree these are valid points. I am also not anti-Pope. I actually have defended him quite a bit in the RF because there are some guys there who want him gone. He has done an great job recruiting and gotten better each season progressively in 24, 25, and 26 classes. He landed Matthews and Staley from 24 who will start game 1 this season...and you have seen me rave here about the 6 WRs combined from the 25 and 26 classes. All 6 of them could play for Bama or UGA and were wanted by the "top tier" programs in the nation. They are a different talent level from the Nimrod/Webb type 4* WRs who we competed with ACC schools for IMO...though some of those guys were ranked pretty high on 1 service or another. There is no doubt that Pope can recruit at a high level and he deserves credit for that. He has a chore on his hands this season though...he has to take a room full of guys who usually dont contribute much until they're soph/juniors and have at leasr half of them ready to compete at SEC level as RS/true freshmen. Our scheme will help with that as you noted by running the ball so much. I think the passing game will probably struggle a bit early in the season but do well by seasons end. FWIW...my "money" is on Pope to get it done this year. I think JA will put up better numbers than Nicos modest numbers from last season...behind a better Oline and with a better WR group by seasons end.

For limited bursts of time and depending on the reason for the trip, it could be as much as 4 to 1 for me. I wouldn't drive 40 hours for a trip through traffick that takes 10, but I would drive an hour "out of my way" to avoid 15 minutes of gridlock. Easy driving is when I am at my most creative.

Driving in traffic really sucks. Hope this helps.

I think Pope is a good target for improvement. Not because he is bad, but because the rest of our coaches are that good. I think under any previous staff Pope would be considered one of the better ones.

But overall this staff is great, and we are looking for improvement vs firing a "bad" coach.

I think
DL
TE
RB
Have been unquestionably great.

I put OL, LB, and CB in the same category, in some areas they are great, run blocking for OL, recruiting for LB, CB got good play last year, but needing improvement elsewhere.

Wr, QB, safety are in the lowest category. Again doesn't mean they are bad but comparatively their positions have had issues. QB and safety are by the coordinators so if you want to replace you have to replace 2 jobs so it's a bigger ask there. That leaves WR as lowest on the totem pole. And at least WR and QB are interconnected. So it's hard to tell when one is good on its own, or if it has help

I agree with every word of this post, including the tiers and placement therein. Could not have said it better myself. Also, i think Faizon and these 25/26 class WRs have a shot to put our passing game back in the 2022 level which is to say the deadliest in the nation. He is THAT good and so are the WRs. If you watch the HS film on these guys...WOW. Different level of athletes than the 4* guys we have been landing for the past 15 or 20 years. The 2025 WR class is really good and are already flashing in practice...which is great because we NEED them to contribute this year and CJH bet the farm on that when he cleaned out the WR room. The 2026 guys have me giddy...Salesi Moa is ranked the #1 athlete nationally, like #42 overall, and I am more excited about BOTH the other 2 WRs in his class than him. Tyreek King just dominated at a 5* camp against some of the nations better DBs and Legend Bey is a freak athlete that will be the fastest man on the team day 1...he ran a laser timed 10.2x 100M as a junior and he isnt a "Leonard Scott" track guy. He plays QB for petes sake and returns punts and kicks!!! You can't do EVERYTHING like that for your HS team and not be a real football player. I think he can be dominant at WR...at the very least he can "take the top off" the defense like Thornton did last year. Thornton ran a 4.3x 40M at the combine and i think Legend has that speed too. Next years QB contest is gonna be crazy. Gmac as a soph/RS freshman against Brandon. I think Merklinger is gonna tranfer after this season if he doesnt get to play. Cant blame him either honestly. The future is so exciting for the next 3 or 4 years man...and we have a 50/50 chance of landing 5* RB Hiter also in 2 weeks. The fact that we haven't signed another RB in the 2026 class shows you how serious this staff is about landing Hiter. We are all in. Cant see him picking Michigan over us but you never know.

Discussion, debate, and argument is a common trait of the VN PF. Some of our posters are very argumentative. Most of us have pet issues that we argue about. Very few of us are chronically passive. This brings a question to mind.

What is the most argumentative thread in our forum?

I'll start. Right now it has to be the Israel / Palestine thread. The people there love to argue just for the sake of argument.

The Trump Administration thread is pretty contentious. I dont check it every day...probably every other day...and it scrolls about 20 pages every 2 days. I dont have the patience to read the same 3 or 4 posters TDS for 10 pages per day at this point. So when i check it now I:

1. Use the fast forward to end button
2. Back up 4 or 5 pages
3. Skim those 4 or 5 ignoring posts by the 2 ladies/pretend ladies that are extremely mentally ill.

That horse is glue and Jello man. Been dead for years at this point. Agree 100% that theres not genuine hate there like there is in the thread for Israel/haters. The hate is real over there. Not at all trying to be political in this post either. Just observations from over here on the Funny Farm. 😆

I'll drop a joke into the convo on the regular. Usually well-received in all the threads. The Hebrews / Hebombs thread, not so much. LOL.
