Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

On the topic of fitness/weight lifting: I've thankfully aged out of this demographic, but I would hate to be a teenager or early 20-something trying to go to the gym now and dealing with expectations vs reality.

Influencers have absolutely nuked the brains of that generation into thinking that if you don't look stage-ready for a bodybuilding competition at all times, you aren't even lifting. Worse yet, many think those physiques are possible naturally in 1-2 years of lifting. Just insane.

Sad to think how many young impressionable people get disappointed when they lift for 6 months and aren't shredded, so they either quit or go straight to anabolics.

For a few reasons, my wife and I chose to cut out alcohol from our lives. I have also been informed recently that my cholesterol levels have started going up and I should consider altering my diet. The problem is we eat pretty healthy for the most part and I try to exercise 4-5 days per week. There are truly some things that are genetic. However, I am seeking out remedies that are non-prescription in nature to help with my cholesterol including diet changes. Prescription pills are the very absolute last resort for me.

I drink sparkling water with lemon lime or oranges. So I can see it. And plain water, and I drink a lot of tea — hot and iced.
I read about a guy in India that drinks a glass of his own pi$$ every day and he's over 100 years old o_O o_O o_O o_O o_O

I bet you guys would drink sodas before you got on his program for long life :):)

Live long and prosper

That’s why the gym community is great. Us late thirties who workout a lot and see young kids, I tell them they are doing great and keep up the good work. Many ask me for spots and workouts which I happily do. I always let them know it’s a grind and takes time but they can do it. Always tell them they are looking bigger every time I see them.

I went from 240 to 185 by doing the following
1. Not being a fat ass and being aware of calories. I try to stay within 1500-1800 a day
2. Got rid of sodas that have sugar
3. Workout 4-5 times a week
4. Adult soccer once a week
5. Creatine. I'm on 5. It's a maintenance dose. Could up it but haven't yet.
6. Progressive overload style at the gym. I've gone up about 15-20 lbs on most exercises since March and about to up most of them again. I've prioritizes perfecting form before I up it so it's stretched longer than I probably should.
7. Profit.

Yes now I agree with that and have noticed that it makes the muscles appear fuller. I have also shed fat though
well yeah if you are taking it and lifting you will replace fat with muscle but muscle weighs more. I was just letting people know that the scale will tell you that you are gaining weight even if your body is looking better.

The volleyball player is gone.

I hope the coaching staff has learned a lesson from that experience. SEC QB cannot have a slim delicate frame that suits a non contact sport like volleyball. Should not evaluate 7 on 7 performances instead of full contact performances.

We have two QBs that look physically big enough to play in the SEC . The 3rd QB is a true freshman and can add weight to his frame. He needs 30 lbs of muscle to be able to survive the season grind of the SEC. He should be drinking a protein shake whenever he’s not actively participating in a play. Heck, I would have him wear a Camel pack filled with protein shakes and drink continuously.
That’s 2 failed volleyball player experiments

How dare you. No encouragement for us 'late 50s' folks?

Can confirm that Reta works well while allowing you to maintain some appetite. Only real negative I see is that Reta can raise your pulse a bit, although honestly, I think that may be a side effect of the diuretic tendency of the glycogen receptor agonist. It tends to mimic a low-carb diet, complete with the fluid shedding. If you stay hydrated it doesn't appear to be a big deal.
Very insightful. I’ve had friends tell me it gives me a slight headache after first few injections but it goes away. Seems to work very well for them. Are you on Reta? Seem to have really good knowledge of it. If so, did you try any of the other glp1’s before?

People being fat vs skinny has almost everything to do with diet and activity levels.

The metabolism is a DISTANT second. I've worked in restaurants a long time and I would observe and monitor what my fat vs skinny co-workers eat.

The fat people eat. The skinny ppl, like skinny girls and guys say stuff like "sometimes I just forget to eat" and I'd watch them do nothing but nibble....and I'd finish their food lol.

I didn't lose weight until I started eating like a skinny person....which feels like not at all.
Is this your medical opinion?

How then did I have a friend who ate double cheeseburgers and drank soft drinks all day every day and stayed skinny as a rail?

I can eat and eat and never go over 195lbs. I can eat almost nothing and never go under 180lbs.

*Sally autocorrected that to "I can beat and eat and never go over 195lbs". Almost left it that way, 😂

I have used both Tirz and Reta. Tirz was much harder on appetite. I do take a very small dose of Reta, just enough to maintain. I went off for a while and slowly everything went wrong. Cravings came back, sugar crept up, weight crept up, inflammation crept us. Yes, it's a crutch, but life is much better on it.

There are always outliers. I also doubt that your friend was actually consistently eating at a significant caloric surplus. Same thing with people who claim to eat very little while still gaining weight. People aren't very good at tracking caloric consumption--their own and especially that of others--unless they are weighing their food and being meticulous about it.

99% of adults who claim to be able to eat whatever they want without gaining any weight are usually either very active (even constant nervous fidgeting can result in burning significant calories) or they have periods when they gorge and periods of little to no caloric consumption. And that averages out to maintenance level caloric consumption for their BMRs.

Overweight people who say they can't lose weight despite barely eating usually snack frequently or have a few large meals here and there that keep them above a caloric deficit. Or they just have small leaks in their diets that add up. It's incredibly easy to accidentally eat 200-300 mindless calories throughout the course of a day, which for most people takes them right out of a deficit and results in no weight loss and even minor weight gain.
