Clarify Boo Carter (Nashville Radio)

let the spin begin

Saturday morning marked practice No. 3 for Tennessee football and Boo went through warmups, this time in a helmet and with shoulder pads. He began by working with a weighted ball before going through agility drills. When the team went outside, Carter stayed in to continue his work.

Dog house door opening up just a bit more

He can walk-on and play right away. NIL would have to pay for tuition and stuff, or else it would be all out of pocket.
I’ve also read that he has to sit a year! Cannot play anywhere this year! I think original question was raised because there are conflicting versions. And NIL would have no problem paying tuition and other expenses a walk on would have! Thanks for the answer but really it creates further confusion. Somebody knows the answer. Tell us!

This sounds like a good summary of my post earlier. We don't know the situation. He could have missed practices due to family situation, etc. These players are not robots, they are human beings. Sure, he could also be pulling a Nico but we don't truly know.
His mother didn't help his rep with her social media posts

I don't claim to know either, but he got his ass kicked by a few players for missing team activities and how he's carried himself. That tells me what I need to know. I know he had issues in HS, which led to him going to 3 different HS's. I hope he matures and gets past all this, but there's clearly some issues here. Just the way his parents carry themselves on social media is pretty telling too. It may be PTSD from Nico's $hit, but it's pretty clear that Boo has Demons.

I believe if he walks on he can play, like the BYU QB that is transferring to Tulane. He would have to sit if he transferred and was on scholarship I believe, but it's different for a walk on. Atleast that's how I've seen it explained.

No matter what happens with Boo this season I sadly believe he won't be a Vol in 2026.
Agree! I believe he ends up at Colorado. He's got some deep obsession with Deion and Color. I'm guessing it's all the attention, partying and how they carry themselves that has him interested. If that's what it is, he definitely needs to leave. That's the exact opposite of what he will get here.

I would think if the BYU QB could transfer, walk on and be able to play this year that any player could. Not sure if being a grad transfer can be used as a loophole, but I'd think if he's walking on that he could play immediately like BYU's QB is doing.

A first time transfer SA who is academically eligible and time on their clock are eligible to play without sitting.

Not so sure about using an NIL deal to cover tuition, that kinda looks like pay for play to me. If a SA has NIL$ banked then they would be able to use that money to cover their tuition...my swag

Reports are that Carter has done community service by visiting the Children's Hospital, something Vols have done for an eternity and it's a great thing. I'm glad the players volunteer their time to bring some joy to sick children.

HOWEVER, media in Nashville are spinning this as Carter being MADE to do this instead of him volunteering his time out of the kindness of his heart.

There have been a lot of rumors about Carter and some have been disproven. The biggest one being that Carter was already out the door when coach came out and said no, he's on the team.

It just seems like to me there is too much spin and speculation going on.

Is it not possible that Carter would just visit the Children's Hospital just because and not because he's being made to? How do you make someone do that anyway?
Community service is part of his return to the football team.

I wish the local media wouldn't do stuff like this. I get they "have a job to do" or whatever but it hurts the program and it paints the kids in a bad light if it's really not true....
Media’s job is not to help or hurt the program, it’s to report facts. If they intentionally sit on facts, then they aren’t media, they’re propagandists. We have enough propaganda in the political realm, we don’t need it in the sports realm.

Now that he has begun practice, he would not be eligible to compete at another school, even if he walked on.
I appreciate the clarity on that point. I had wondered when the "it's set" day for transferring shook out exactly these days.

Boo's with the team or he's losing a year. From here I'm 100% rooting for him to keep his head down and grind and get his place back.

My understanding is that would only apply to SEC schools. No one has tried the enroll and walk on thing but I suspect that’s what might have been being explored. The new agent thing is suspect as well. Hey, I hope it works out, but if Boo is playing here next year I’d be completely surprised.

No he wasn’t, but they speculated on everything else so what else is new?
There is a pretty massive difference between speculating on what things he will have to do to get back on the team and speculating as to whether or not he has legal issues based on unsubstantiated rumors.

In case you need me to spell it out for you, he would not have a legal case against any media member for speculating on his football future. However, if people reported unsubstantiated and incorrect things about legal issues that do not exist, they would face a fairly healthy lawsuit. One that he would have almost a slam dunk chance of winning.

You sure about the walk on thing? For the life of me, I seem to remember someone doing that and paying their own way this year? Might be imagining it?

BYU QB Jake Retzlaff recently did it and transferred to Tulane. Before that, Xavier Lucas did it and left Wisconsin for Miami.

The only way to transfer and be eligible immediately outside of the transfer portal window, is to unenrolled from your current school and enroll in another school, provided you have made no contact with that school’s staff. Because you did not enter the transfer portal, you cannot have any contact with another schools coaching staff until you enroll in that school. They don’t even have to pay their own way once they get there. They can be placed on scholarship. It will be a moot point from now on anyway, since there are no longer walk-ons and scholarship limits, just roster limits.

But once you have participated in a practice, you’re not eligible to play at another school during that season.

If the BYU quarterback had just left school and enrolled somewhere else under the circumstances he did, BYU almost certainly would have pursued a tampering case against them because it’s just not realistic to transfer to a new school and automatically assume that you would be a member of the team. But because he was dismissed from school, it worked out.
