I'll get flamed, but while that trade is a big overpay I think it is one you could justify not getting completely flabbergasted over. Preller also sees (rightly) the Duds as being more vulnerable that they looked earlier in the season and obviously is in win now mode.

Yes he's good. But it's not like he's been early career Kimbrel or prime Aroldis Chapman or something like that. His 1.1 fWAR so far this season puts him 12th among closers. He's a good closer in a league full of good closers.

Trading an 18 year old SS (with a top 10 ranking) isn't what bothers me.

Trading it for a reliever is absurd. But my general philosophy is to never give up something real for a reliever. You want to trade that for Sale or Murphy? I'm good with it. Not a 25 year old reliever.

Agreed, Relievers are volatile. And relievers on expiring contracts aren't typically that expensive (see AA deadline additions almost every year). Trading one of the best prospects in all of baseball for a reliever is incredibly poor value.
