Tennessee Softball 2025

I always believed the folks with the degrees from Ivy League schools, Stanford, Vandy, GA Tech etc always carried more weight with resumes for jobs and you were looked upon more favorably for promotions than us commoners. Maybe that was really not true but it was believed to be.

When I as at TN in the 70's and TN was beating Vandy badly in Nashville, the Vandy student section would start a cheer in the 4th qtr: Hey Hey that's OK cause your going to work for me one day. Ha ha.
Saint George Cafego does not approve.

I was a hiring manager for a very large aerospace company and can tell you that a degree from certain universities like those you mentioned carried a lot of clout. It often was the determining factor on employees of similar experiences.

I worked most of my career in the Defense business to with Smiths Industries (British owned), Raytheon and BAE Systems North America. I was a contracts guy. I liked it. Got to travel a lot and met all kinds of folks.

Its for sure dependent upon the specific career but there are places Michigan and Stanford will take you Tennessee can't and I say that as an alum. Totally different ballgame when you are talking about Stanford.

My current role is because I had a decade of experience. The entry levels below me are coming only from certain schools fair or not. Outside the Top 25 Public School ranks? Highly unlikely.

I’m assuming Texas Tech isn’t on the A-List?

The 2025 WCWS averaged 1.3 million viewers per game. And 2.2 million for the final series.

The 2025 US population is estimated at 341million.

Which means that 0.4 to 0.65% of the population watched the biggest games of the year.

I enjoy college softball, but it is virtually invisible to the public at large. Translation…over 90% of the population have never heard of even the most famous softball players.

Every person’s different. It really depends on experience and the interviews. The degree was checked by HR before they were invited. I didn’t care if they played sports or had secured financial independence and don’t know anyone who weighted those things for a job that did not require a security clearance. The degree pedigree influenced the hiring by attracting enough attention to merit an interview and at the end when one is trying to decide which equality qualified person to hire.

Never hired a graduate of Texas Tech. Hired a lot of A&M, Notre Dame, Ga Tech. UVA

if you’re comparing numbers to the entirety of the US population then most sports are going to be “virtually invisible.”

Would you guys rather have really great pitching and less than adequate hitting, or really great hitting, with only adequate pitching?

I want both great hitting and great pitching, but if I had to choose one pitching would be the winner. You should be able to scrape a run or two across if you have the pitching that is enough.

Given that no team has ever won a game by scoring zero runs…I think I’d take hitting first.
Average hitters turn into great hitters against average pitching.

I can't recall a team in recent history that won a national title, or really came that close to one with average pitching.

I think most of us would agree, you better have both if you want to win in today's game.

Texas this year would be the closest to a balanced team. Strong hitting, 2.16 ERA for Tavan.

Texas Tech had the Top Tier pitcher who after 3 rounds got exposed by Texas the better hitting team.

How many games did we lose where Pickens dominated to only drop the game because we couldn’t scratch 1 more run? I’ll side with hitting.

I would not classify Kavan as average pitching ( not sure that is what you are saying). In the 4 games she pitched in the CWS, unless I am forgetting a game, I don't recall her giving up an earned run.

What team has won it or come close with average pitching?

2.16 ERA isn’t in the category of Abbott, Canady, Bahl or Pickens. She’s a strong pitcher that complemented a complete team. She’s not good enough to lead a team alone IMO like those mentioned.
