President Donald Trump - J.D. Vance Administration

Proves my point about the media….

Tweets like this from HSA actually make me more skeptical, not less.

The NWS severely underestimated impact of this event until a few hours before it. This was a 1 in a 1000 year flood and a lightly worded flash flood watch hoisted a few hours prior isnt "accurate and precise forecasting". Obviously in hindsight, the upgrade to flash flood warning and later flood emergency was late.

Honestly, I don't put this on the feet of DOGE. The national arm of NWS that issues Excessive Rainfall forecasts understated it clearly in the days leading up to it. The locals understated it.

The only way DOGE could be blamed here is if the local agency's "full staffing" was the result of being staffed partially by other office's remotely. Someone in the Tulsa office, for example, may not understand the topography as well as someone who lives there. That lack of knowledge could cause a delay in upgrading. This is just a hypothetical but we've seen that with other major severe events recently...

So these employees were working with outdated address information?

Do you continue to work with outdated contact information on file? I know if I did, there would be no way to get any benefit information.
probably just more government inefficiency. some system that doesn't talk to the rest. My car registration is still to an old address. I have gone in person every year for the last 8 years to the county office to try and get it corrected, and it has still yet to be actually updated. I have even been twice to the state office, and same results. emails, phone calls, even physical mailing hasn't worked either.

with the government its a pretty safe bet to blame incompetence rather than some cover up.

It is a provable, flat out lie to say that the forecasts for how much rain would fall were accurate or "precise." The National Weather Service underestimated the amount of rain that would fall by about 50%, in fact.

Here are the "precise" forecasts issued 20 and 32 hours prior to the event. Im trying to figure out where the 1 in a 1000 year flood gets mentioned.

20 hrs - May cause minor flooding
32 hrs - Low risk of localized heavy rain

Noem is better at puppy killing than telling the truth...

You mean to tell me the weather forecast wasn't dead on accurate?

The "NOAA / NWS cuts are to blame for the flood deaths" remind me of the "Measles outbreak is the fault of RFKjr" partisan posturing from a few months ago. The measles story turned out to be about a Mennonite community who aren't getting vaccinated anyway. The flood narrative seems suspicious to me...like the campers were in a dangerous place.

Yeah, it was a missed forecast. It happens. The left saying it was because of cuts is just posturing. The Trump admin saying it was perfect is just lying...

This whole thing is nothing but a terrible tragedy where no one in particular is at fault. I remember the 2010 flood here in middle TN, nobody was predicting a foot of rain would fall in a matter of hours.
the need to scavenge a natural disaster to assault or defend politicians is an ugly symptom of a bigger disease.

Weather alerts are pushed to my phone as a text msg. Is that not the case for everyone?

They absolutely were predicting that. They did miss eastern extent into Nashville but they had a wide 10+ inch swath from Millington to just east of Dickson...

They did but it was too late for some. Might not have had a cell connection either if too remote...
What I am about to share is not specifically related to the tragedy discussed....

I have noticed a 'phone conditioning' that we have accepted and come to rely on. For example, I save all my appts in my calendar. All those businesses give me an appt alert as a reminder. When it doesn't happen, i automatically think I saved it wrong. Most of the time, the "reminder system" is down.

Here's the point. If I have been conditioned to only be vigilant when my phone alerts me of a weather emergency and it doesn't happen (because of no service, etc), it is likely not even on the people's mind as a possibility.

May 1 and May 2, 2010 forecast (20 hrs out). Had a rental get completely washed away (did have flood insurance) and another had damage.

Exactly, they missed on the forecast for the entire upper part of the Cumberland which is what caused the flooding in and around Nashville.

We camp a lot, wife insists that we have a NOAA weather radio with us.

I posted both the maps. Combined, it was pretty close. Might have slightly missed NE extent both days but combined both days, it forecasted a foot of rain for most of metro Nashville...

It is fascinating in real time to watch the people who celebrated the Biden Admin's failure to predict and warn of the tragic consequences of Helene upon Western NC now blaming Trump for not being able to ferry everyone in Tx to safety.

I don't know when we came up with the expectation that government protect us from weather, but whoever sold that to the general public, they were good at what they did.
