there was a "defund the police" idea mentioned somewhere. I don't know if it was a proposal or just a notion to enthuse the voters, but it is connected to the dude.

I think the majority of those mayors congressman and those big cities love screaming about defunding the police. In reality we know it will not happen, but it can't help the police who are on the ground knowing they have a leader who hates them

Just wait until they start losing more and more of their largest taxpayer individuals and companies. Raising spending whilst simultaneously losing revenue is always a recipe for disaster.

Defund the police is a catch-all phrase and it doesn't mean the same thing to all people. Some literally do want to disband the police. Others want to defund their military-type gear and weapons. And others are wanting to defund them as first responders when there is a mentally or emotionally unstable person who needs intercession.

It's the reality. The inability to account for human behavior in response to tax policy is why tax projections never materialize.

This won't happen. The idea that taxing the rich will ruin x city or x country is perhaps the most effective propaganda that rich people have used to convince poorer people to vote against their own interests. We're ballooning our own deficit just so rich people don't have to pay taxes, and MAGA is in favor of that.

I don't know if the idea is good or not but I am in favor of it being tested. Social workers are better educated than the average police officer. They have more training on how to connect people in need with resources. On the surface, that is a better option than simply carting off people to jail.

"ruin" is the operative word. Once the tax base is gone, services, infrastructure, etc all suffer. Tourism would likely keep NYC well funded in spite of losing the very wealthy. But that only happens if tourists feel safe.

The tax base doesn't leave, though. NYC has increased taxes on millionaires twice recently and ended up with more millionaires and more revenue each time

There's a reason that even its proponents don't use it anymore. It was horrible marketing from the very beginning.

I possess no knowledge to contradict your claims. But there is a point where the juice is no longer worh the squeeze. People choose to live where they do for all sorts of reasons. Expense is one of the factors. The weathly have access to resources which provide a lot of choices (remote work, transportation, etc). If the golden geese are killed, and the revenue is not made up, it will eventually have an impact.

Agreed. It's unfortunate. I think the OG was replace police with other first responders in certain situations. But then the phrase was used in other contexts and it stuck. Now it is poorly defined and is polarizing.
