Let the Vitello speculation begin!

around 25:00 mark from Vitello today.. "We faced a pitcher on a Sunday in Lindsay Nelson Stadium where he flat out got offered 2x the amount of money that he could've made here, so he chose the other place."

didn't sound thrilled saying it.

He has openly said if players are looking for a payday, to not come here.

I don’t think he was trying to infer he wish he had more money to spend to buy that player. Sounds like he was annoyed with the fact that some kids are simply just going to the highest bidder these days. I don’t think TV wants a bunch of mercenaries.

It absolutely does. Many coaches want to be the first to win a NC at a school—not the 4th or 5th. The Ark job is more appealing because it’s never been done.
Only one out of many considerations. I’m not sure how heavily that would weigh into a decision to accept that position.

Coach Vitello is a great one and one I would haveloved to play for. He has built a monster. As such, we can only expect others would like to have. I believe he is one for loyalty and we are doing all he asks. DW and the rest of us just need to continue supporting him.

As for me, I don't know that I would want a leader no one else wanted. Now on to 2026 and Omaha. If we make it I am going to try to be there. It's been on my bucket list for years.

And no coach would take the Oregon State job over the Arkansas one, I guess that was my point. A&M football is as mediocre as it gets yet coaches consider that job borderline elite. Really nothing to do with Vitello just the thought process that one player not making a play in the title game has any bearing on the desirability of that job over another.
Why say things like the opening line? I would bet a lot of money that if y’all called Mitch Canham after the CWS and offered him DVH’s salary (vs his current $650K) he still sticks it out at Oregon State. What does Arkansas offer that OSU doesn’t? They’re going to their 7th CWS since DVH arrived (he has 8), they’ve won 3 titles, they’ve made it there under 2 different coaches. So you have a bigger stadium, more NIL, can likely get higher ranked recruits; but OSU’s proven they don’t need those “advantages” to win a CWS.

I bet he'd stay, but not for those reasons. Going from the PNW to the south is a culture shock for a lot of people.. culturally and within the job of coaching at that level.

And he’s from Washington state and an alum so yeah he’s not leaving for any reason. But that validates my point that not everyone is choosing Arkansas over Oregon State. The reasons I listed as an advantage for Arkansas aren’t necessarily what drives everyone, nor is the lifestyle/culture you referenced.

Oregon State was just an example. Everyone has different aspirations to your point, but when one of the top SEC jobs opens the support for baseball is just different. Most coaches would want every available resource they can get. But then again, you do have people like Mark Few who stay at successful mid-majors too.

It always seems to me like Arkansas fans think very highly of their program, considering they've never won a national championship. The title after you click the link is:

Vitello seems up for being next Arkansas coach, but Tennessee has one major edge

When he leaves Tennessee it will be for a MLB job.

This has always been so weird to me. They've got a great stadium, deep pockets, and a big fanbase---but they can't win the big one, and yet it's still considered to be a fantastic job. Maybe has something to do with the big coaching contracts, but they just can't get it done. Plus they have those strange yell leaders.

Tony has coached at the following places:

  • 8 Years at Mizzou (0 Championships; 0 CWS Appearances)
  • 3 Years at TCU (0 Championships; 0 CWS Appearances)
  • 4 Years at Arkansas (0 Championships; 1 CWS Appearance)
  • 8 Years at Tennessee (1 Championship; 3 CWS Appearances)
He has spent twice as long leading us here as he has he did as an assistant in Arkansas, with more success. Also, Tony is the highest paid coach in the sport. I think Arkansas is in for a rude awakening when DVH retires and their prodigal son isn't coming home.

Tony probably doesn’t. want to live around a bunch of toothless Ozarkians.

I wouldn't move to Fayetteville if someone offered to double my income.
Lived in Atlanta during 80s and there is not enough money on the planet to move me back there. If Arky doesn't up the ante significantly, why the hell would anyone, including Coach V, ever consider moving to Fville??
