The damage is probably done. They are quickly approaching the moment when they have far too many elderly to be supported by far too few in the generation behind them. And I suspect there will be a low birthrate in spite of the legal change per # of kids. Their economy is catastrophic, and there is no indication that I've seen that birthrates are rising. It looks like the people are eschewing investment and buying--as well as bringing kids into the world--in favor of hording cash and hoping unemployment #s stop plummeting.The economic fortunes of China is down stream of trade. Surely you accept that reality?
Demographics is an issue for them today. But in 20-30 years? Maybe not. The one child policy has been gone for almost a decade now.
BTW, I'm not arguing that US Trade has/had no effect. It was the US tariffs IMHO that finally pushed China off the ledge. When Chinese manufacturers began closing, missing payroll, and laying off, China became wounded far more than most realize.
