Iran

Here’s a question

If we could have gone back in time and prevented North Korea from acquiring nuclear bombs, would we do it?

I would go back and stop Pakistan before even North Korea. It isn't that I think Pakistan has a bad government, they just don't have a stable government. They are the most likely nation for some Rogue terrorist group to acquire nukes from.

So Tucker memorized some statistics in order to score points ...... For a gotcha game. He's perfect for current American political discourse isn't he?
Yes, but I'm pretty sure if he had asked more relevant questions Cruz (or most people in DC) can't say what the plan is for Iran.

Strongly disagree with this statement.

Nuclear weapons are incredibly complex. Splitting the atom isnt easy. My little brother is a nuclear engineer. He has no idea how to make a nuclear weapon. Has never met anyone who could...not his professors, his bosses, coworkers etc. Literally none. Ever. Not once. In fact, that work is so compartmentalized (for obvious reasons) that theres not 1 human being in this country that could build a nuclear device that would actually detonate. Thank God. Even trying to acquire the required equipment and parts would immediately be flagged by the FBI, CIA, probably Mossad and half the other intelligence agencies on Earth. We take that stuff super seriously.

Nevermind the fact that you cannot get your hands on "yellow cake" Uranium that is enriched to the 90%+ purity of weapons grade. Nor any other Uranium...of any grade. The Iranians probably got their Uranium from China or a former Soviet state...and have managed to admittedly achieve 60% purity on a large amount. That is 1 enrichment cycle away from weapons grade Uranium. Thats why they are getting their azzes handed to them right now. This has taken several decades and BILLIONS of dollars. It has also taken incredible levels of deception and secrecy, and cost them many lives in the process. It also required either China or Russia giving them supplies AND at least some of the technology to enrich. Yet they STILL don't have a weapon. Thankfully. They would absolutely nuke Israel right now if they had one. They have said as much.

It is absolutely not a foregone conclusion that any nation who wants a nuclear weapon can have one in 2025. There are lots of countries that want them, that dont have them now. Mostly the ones who hate us fwiw. We can, should, and will prevent anyone else from having nuclear weapons that we can...especially in our hemisphere. If China wants to arm their lesser neighbors like N Korea, there likely nothing we can do to prevent that. Good luck to anyone else trying to acquire that technology without US approval. We can detect even underground tests from halfway around the world.

Also don't underestimate the Iranian support of Houthi pirates as a factor. That pissed off all the rich Gulf Oil states and most the Middle East.

I agree. By the way, wonder why they closed off their border with Iran?

Not sure. What is scary about Pakistan is that almost a third of their nation is in active rebellion on a regular basis. Their feud with India doesn't help the situation as well. At least they are friendly to the US.

I don't. The emerging govt is likely to be heavily composed of military strongmen who cannot be trusted.

It's extremely likely that Russia and China WILL want to befriend the new regime to use them as puppets (see the Palestinians and Yemeni govts) knowing they can manipulate them to be disruptive in the region and perhaps manipulate their oil reserves (like we did under the Shah.)

The world, at least what passes for the free world, has no reason to trust nor befriend the new Iranian govt nor the judgement of the Iranian people in picking a govt.
If there's a revolution to force out the clerics then it stands to reason that the military that's joined at the hip with the clerics will be gone too.
We'll want to befriend the new regime as well.
There's nothing that says the Iranian people aren't qualified to choose a government. They were doing pretty well until the Dulles brothers got involved.

The Iraqis HAD a secular tyrannical govt when we invaded. We've been unable to reform a stable secular govt there and if we completely left it would very likely turn into a non-secular Muslim govt within months.

Power has a way of sustaining itself and the Revolutionary Guard in Iran who wield a lot of guns are extremely tied to the shia imams who wield A LOT of moral power there.

It's a double whammy. What the imams say will go to the hearts of the people. What the imams can't control, the Revolutionary Guard can kill and has a history of killing in Iran.
it's a big chore to hold Iraq together with their different demographics. If I'm not mistaken, Iran is more homogeneous.

I dislike Trump bigly. I never took his foreign policy as cowering

My comments were more so regarding my view of foreign policy under Biden and the policy I assumed LG preferred.

One month ago I would’ve called Trump’s foreign policy cowering. At that time it looked like he was about to sign his own form of the horrible Iran deal he mocked under Obama and his stance on Russia has bordered on cowering at times.

Today, my view has changed. I hate to use this phrase because it’s normally done by the worst of the MAGA crowd in order to condone horrific policy (like tariffs). But I think he really may have been playing 4D chess with Iran

No you haven’t. Saddam never claimed to have nuclear weapons. He never claimed to have enriched uranium beyond the scope of civilian use.

Comparing the two is lazy.
We've all seen it before. Which you won't admit because it might make your team look bad.
