Had better coaching at Pittsburg and a good year only team to beat Clemson that year that got him in the league. He was done very bad by Butch Jones, just crazy to give him first start in the swamp and he never recovered here. One of many Butched up moves.Peterman is statistically the worst QB in NFL history and also played worse than any UT quarterback I’ve ever seen when he got in for us.
This would be believable if he didn’t go on to be the worst NFL QB of all time statistically. Butch was horrendous, but I just don’t Peterman was cut out for the SECHad better coaching at Pittsburg and a good year only team to beat Clemson that year that got him in the league. Fan Buzz has Peterman the 13th worst of 20 worst of all time NFL QBs and Ryan Leaf as the #1 worst QB 2nd was Jamarcus Russel, and 5th was Heath Shuler. So, they had Shuler as worse than Peterman in the NFL.This would be believable if he didn’t go on to be the worst NFL QB of all time statistically. Peterman’s career passer rating is 39.4. You get a 39.6 just for attempting an incomplete pass. Leaf, Shuler, and Russell all had at least a 50.0 rating.Fan Buzz has Peterman the 13th worst of 20 worst of all time NFL QBs and Ryan Leaf as the #1 worst QB 2nd was Jamarcus Russel, and 5th was Heath Shuler. Peterman just wasn’t a high draft pick, so it didn’t sting as much to draft him, but in terms of actual play on the field and nothing else, he was statistically significantly worse than any of the guys you named. You and I could literally have a better passer rating than Peterman has.
But yet he sucked against pretty much every SEC school sans Vandy! We had a weak schedule last year so it’s easy to put stats up against the blind, deaf and dumb school, it’s when we got into real competition that he looked like he had never seen a football game before!Nico was in the top-half of the SEC, the toughest league in the country, as a 1st year starter lol. He processed well enough as a young'en, but needed more experience to reach the next level. He's not Harrison Bailey haha. HH was a vet when he showed up and left the greatest UT QB of all-time. Quite a bar.
We'll be very lucky if our QB in 2025 ends up 7th out of 16 SEC QBs, imo. I hold out some hope just because of CJH and his elite scheme.
I’d be more than happy to place a bet with you that JA ends up with a better season than ole 5-star head case? Nico might have all the talent in the world in his arm, but it seems he has his dad’s brain and we have all seen that isn’t a good place to be. When we had a huge talent advantage he threw for great numbers. When the game was on the line against some better comp the game was put into Sampson hands or in case of Oklahoma which we were much better than in the defense and Sampson hands. They didn’t trust Nico to run the offense, plain and simple and of those close to the program I know, they were hoping and praying he took a step forward this year before he was gone and it wasn’t to the NFL. They spent a lot of money on a head case that couldn’t grasp the offense and they couldn’t just turn and burn after one season, but I promise they weren’t completely broken when he left either!I'll just ask if you think Joey Aguilar is anywhere near being a first rounder even if he has a stellar season at UT? Those odds are long.
Let's look at it this way, if Nico had left earlier and Josh had pulled Aguilar from the portal when UCLA did, we'd all be scratching our heads over WTH is Josh doing getting this guy? There would be a lot of "who is this guy?" and why didn't we recruit better.
Just because Joey Aguilar was what we could get at a late hour doesn't mean we have to make him out to be more than he is: a SunBelt Conference QB who managed to move up to UCLA, which wasn't a great P4 place to move to by everyone's agreement, then he hit the lottery when Nico showed his butt and we took him because we simply had to have a QB and he was the best available.
How will he play for us? I hope he beats all expectations. Personally, however, my expectations as very tempered because a year ago we'd have never thought.......I wish we had Joey Aguilar instead of Nico.
We might've wished for other QBs to replace Nico but let's be honest, Joey Aguilar wasn't on our radar.
The #1 overall pick in the draft signed with Incarnate Word. Josh Allen signed with Wyoming. Brock Purdy, Joe Flacco, Case Keenum, Jordan Love…all NFL starters, all passed up by Power 5 programs. There ARE exceptions but usually if ALL SEC, B1G, ACC, and Big 10 programs took a pass on you, there was a reason. Maybe Aguilar DID develop like Pavia but you have to admit NO ONE saw Pavia being as dynamic as he was. We'd have all bet against it...... all day, every day. As a matter of fact, I think many of us expect Vandy to come back down to earth this season, even with Pavia coming back.
Longshots DO come in sometimes but that's not usually the case. That's just reality.
Absolutely no question that UCLA sucks and Nico screwed himself for the season. I'd never bet against UT having a better season, including Joey Aguilar, than UCLA, including Nico. Everyone can agree Nico damaged his career by moving to a much less talented team and Aguilar improved his twice by going to UCLA then UT.I’d be more than happy to place a bet with you that JA ends up with a better season than ole 5-star head case? I’m along the lines of with Nico this team was at best 8-4 and most likely 7-5. So losing him to pick up JA puts us in the same spot. After watching him from some practices and last season, I knew he was overhyped and never going to lead us to a playoff win. I’m not even sure I agree that he’s really that talented a passer to begin with. I think he did well with 7on7 because it’s against air with no threat of getting hit. So truthfully I’m one of the fans that would have been ok with the trade directly with Appy for JA because I didn’t think much about Nico to begin with. I’m also ok with the fact this is a young team, so having a QB that doesn’t seem to be scared of his own shadow will be a great help. He can bridge us to another QB next year with an OL that should build on a good first season together. Either way, I think we are all about to see that Nico wasn’t a 5 star QB and the only thing I hate about him leaving was leaving so late that it did limit us. Should have kicked him down the road after the playoff game after he tried to hold them hostage.Absolutely no question that UCLA sucks and Nico screwed himself for the season. My issue is with the inability to look at the reality that without all the Nico drama, there's no way anyone on Volnation would've said, "You know what we should do? We should get rid of Nico and grab this guy Joey Aguilar from App State. That would make UT better."
I'm just the voice of: just because you're a Vols fan doesn't mean you have to suspend the reality of our QB situation. It's sketchy. It just is. There's a lot more unknowns than I'd like to see.
Some players develop a little later in life. The problem with that argument is Joey Aguilar's level was the SunBelt Conference. I'm not sure many SunBelt Conference QBs have SEC talent.
While there are exceptions, to get to the SunBelt as a QB, you have been passed on by the SEC, B1G, ACC, Big 10, etc. I can assume ALL those coaches were wrong, I guess, or that Joey Aguilar really developed incredibly well at App State, I suppose, but the fact is he was a SunBelt Conference QB for a couple of years after JUCO, I believe.
I like my orange tinted glasses but......
Yup plus I like that we have a 24 yr old QB. Age matters. His experience is crazy!QB is as much brains as talent. Nico may have had talent, but didn't have the brains and so he couldn't execute.
Hendon Hooker ended up pretty badly at Va Tech, came here and got his mind right and thrived. The thing is, dudes at this level almost always have talent- they just need the rest to go with it.
Versus only conference opponents, he actually rises from 7th out of 16 QBs to #6.But yet he sucked against pretty much every SEC school sans Vandy! Yes. So, JA, playing at lower levels than SEC, threw 56/24.Like I said, I have no idea how he will perform. I do know that Jordan Love threw 20 Tds and 17 picks his Junior season at Utah St and was a first round draft pick. I also acknowledge that Aguilar is having to learn a new offense without a spring camp, which is very difficult. My only point in my previous post is that he can't just be written off simply because his playing time has been at Appy St. and he has thrown 26 picks in two seasons. He has also thrown 56 TDs in that time. For comparison, Jordan Love's split was 60/29 in three seasons, Josh Allen's was 44/21 in two seasons as a starter and Joe Flacco's was 41/15 in two seasons as a starter. All three of those guys faced similar levels of competition.
I was on board with moving on from Nico in December. Probably would not have handpicked Aguilar as the successor, but given the timing we didn’t have many options.Absolutely no question that UCLA sucks and Nico screwed himself for the season.
