After having what we were told was the "best tiramisu in Rome" recently, I feel like I'm an expert on this subject. Tiramisu is definitely not cake. I'd put it in with the puddings or custards or cheesecake categories

Fact is cake is not the best dessert, not even close, but if you must have cake, it goes like this for me (qualification cake must be in the name - ie therefore it is a cake):

1. Cheesecake
2. Carrot cake (buttercream or cream cheese icing - no cheap stuff)
3. Devils food cake
4. Hummingbird cake
5. German chocolate cake

Honorable mention: red velvet

I will say that my cake preferences are complex and not bland, so they are dependent on a well executed cake. The texture, density, moistness, flavor must all be good. If not, these cakes can easily be ranked below a typical cake your friend made. But for the purpose of this discussion, let’s assume we’re eating the real deal.
