The dental student was driving home from a Memorial Day weekend excursion at Williamstown Lake in Kentucky to Columbus where he attends school at Ohio State.

As the NCAA baseball regionals were announced, he found that Tennessee would be hosting, which was not a surprise, but also that the Cincinnati Bearcats would be there, which was a pleasant surprise.

Now learning to fill cavities, La Salle High School alum Griffin Merritt used to do his drilling with a bat. He slugged 34 homers in four seasons with the UC baseball team. Thanks to the additional eligibility granted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he had an extra year.

The allure of baseball and the Rocky Top banjo brought him to Knoxville.

He delayed dental school for one year and went to Tennessee, slugging 18 homers and batting .311 while making it to his childhood dream of playing in Omaha. He scored the go-ahead run keeping Tennessee from elimination against Stanford, but on June 20, 2023, Merritt played his last game as LSU beat the Volunteers 5-0.
