Trade Wars and Tariffs

“I watched this film and I saw that it was filmed in many different locations around the world, including Africa,” said the reporter through the interpreter/moderator. “Of course, we all are aware of the tariffs that President Donald Trump has been imposing on overseas productions and films. So, is this particular movie under that tariff? And how much of the film was shot overseas?”

According to Entertainment Weekly, Cruise glanced at director Christopher McQuarrie, there was a pause (which, in my mind’s eye, is deliciously awkward), and then Cruise told the moderator: “We’d rather answer questions about the movie. Thank you.”

“I think that’s a fair answer,” replied the moderator.

That’s class.

That’s how it’s done.

That’s how you avoid alienating half your potential audience.

That’s how you keep the publicity on your reported $400 million project and not on stupid distractions.

That’s how you avoid headlines like, “Cruise slams Trump.”

That’s how you avoid Trump calling you a “dried up prune” and posting videos where he knocks you over with a golf ball.

The secret to becoming and remaining a movie star is a simple two-part plan: 1) choose decent projects that earn audience trust, and 2) retain the goodwill of your audience.

In other words, don’t star in crap movies and don’t be an *******.

How do you avoid being an arrogant *******? Easy — you say things like, “We’d rather answer questions about the movie. Thank you.”

Yeah, Trump bullies Hollywood as an enemy of American businesses. Hollywood doesn't stand up to him. The right cheers spineless Hollywood,

"This is how you do it. Fold to the makeup-wearing elitist fool who can't talk for 1 minute without rambling...Mind your business Hollywood....oh yeah, it is your business...uhh... Doesn't matter if he's threatening your business. Now he won't call you a prune. You're cool now. You're not arrogant. We like our pesidents that way, not our actors, because it's important you have good decorum or we won't see your movie. And to prove you're not arrogant, you gotta be a coward and do what's best for Tom, not Hollywood. He can bring the fight to you, BUT YOU CANNOT FIGHT BACK. You can't even talk about it.

The president, however, should be alienating as many people as possible. Again, arrogance, and pretty much any other bad adjective you can think of is fine for him, too. We elected him to be a public servant so this is how he should act. Standing up for yourself would piss us off. If you stand up for yourself, we won't see your movie. 👍 "

Hollywood can piss off.

Trump needs to STHU with this whole "I'll be watching" BS. Start acting like a president and not a CEO. Let the consumers watch it and make up their minds. And if you're so confident that the tariffs will work, then wait, watch them work, and then take credit once they do. But lashing out like this during the process makes you look weak.

the media loves it

@Thunder Good-Oil by all means please tell this Toyota executive he has no idea what he’s talking about.

Tell him what would happen if China was to feel empowered to put a blockade on Taiwan and he couldn’t get chips to their US assembly plants.

Sounds more like an executive doing a CYA and stirring up consumers that can’t afford his $60,000 SUVs pickup trucks anyway.

No you need to tell that to the customers paying the tariffs. That will straighten them out. The COO provided actuals on cost increases if he made them up it easy to verify.

He's not going to get it. He's already dug in and can only double down from here on out.

New vehicle prices are determined by what competitors charge. If Toyota can’t compete within that very basic micro-economic frame work then they will regress. The COO might could be being pre-emptive with his excuses.
