Has anyone committed yet? That's how I would define "going well".
This is how I remember it, Johnny Majors (JM) had become beligerant to admin and donors. He was showing up drunk at fund raisers and saying things in a way he should not. Admin was trying to get him to retire and take a position in AD (Athletic department). At one point, we talked with Spurrier at Duke, he was ready to come if JM retired. JM did not and Spurrier went to UF. JM had a heart issue (or something) and had to go the the hospital. Fulmer took over and won a few games. Admin tried to get JM to retire. Even had his minister talk with him. Had his closest friends talk with him. Admin again offered him a position in AD. JM got out of hospital, called the press conference himself and met the press on campus outside the football complex. Without any conversation with Admin, he announced he was back. He then proceeded to lose games. Whereas, Fulmer was on a winning streak. Again, Admin, friends, minister and donors tried to get him to retire to position in AD. JM refused. JM then made it ugly. Split the fan base (not the major donors). Admin valued JM contributions and did not want to mistreat him. They wanted him to retire gracefully. Thought he was on the downside of his career. JM disagreed. Lots of very heated words on both sides led to JM getting relieved of his job. It was said the Fulmer was pushing donors to get rid of JM. Dont know. I am sure that AD and donors were asking Fulmer to take over if JM would retire. JM was bitter and took the Pittsburg job. It is my understanding that he did not talk with admin for years or at least until Fulmer was pushed out in a similar way. I wish the we could have found a way to part gracefully. Neither of them (JM and PF) would allow it. I dont think that either party was proud of how it went down. JM was a good and proud man. He did great things for our program when we needed him. He was the coach when I was at UT. "When Johnny came marching home"Johnny had alcohol issues and had become mean as hell. It was never what it seemed, especially on campus where he’d alienated everyone including players. Johnny blamed Fulmer but Fulmer was one of a handful that stood up for him.
My momma never liked Phil Fulmer. Majors fan forever. This is how I remember it, Johnny Majors (JM) had become beligerant to admin and donors. Put in 15 Miles on Mtn Bike yesterday, for 47th. Spent after noon with kiddos. Had a good dinner at Burger & Barrell with wife and friends. Fishing takes up a lot of time, and is an uber selfish pursuit...What area you doing on here today @Jackcrevol ? Shouldn't you be about waist deep in a mountain stream somewhere right about now?
