This isn't about McConnell. He's going to be gone any day now. This is about Republicans exercising the power they had. If you wanna throw McConnell under the bus, have at it.

If I were McConnell I would have had an up or down vote on Garland late in Obama's term when there'd be no more time to nominate someone else. Win the vote with his Republican majority and then let Trump take it from there. Thus he did not handle it like I would have

That was on a different day than the quote I'm referring to. Mitch McConnell made his reasoning clear on March 20, with this :

"We think the important principle in the middle of this presidential election, which is raging, is that the American people need to weigh in and decide who's going to make this decision." - Sen. Mitch McConnell on March 20, 2016

There is no room for ambiguity in that quote, which you didn't mention. McConnell was saying that we should wait for the 2016 presidential election to take place in 2016, before filling the vacant Supreme Court seat. However, in 2020, he rushed the confirmation of Amy Comey Barrett through in order to be ahead of the 2020 presidential election. That was blatantly hypocritical.

This discussion is about hypocrisy. So, yes, it's about McConnell and how Senate Republicans changed their reasoning from 2016 to 2020, on whether or not a Supreme Court vacancy should be filled during a presidential election year.

Call 'em hypocrites if it makes you feel better. It's a small price to pay for a 6-3 majority in the Supreme Court. After seeing Garland as AG, no price would be too high to pay to keep him off the bench. McConnell did this country a great service. If he had to be hypocritical, fine. Whatever. It's politics.

You’re intentionally cutting off part of the quote again.

So the senate did not want to confirm, he was a lame duck president, neither of these were factors in 2020.

Those factors change things. That’s why you’re trying hard to ignore them and cutting them out of quotes

I think he loves the trappings of being a Supreme Court Justice too much to step down, while he is still in good health. If he becomes ill, that could change. He will turn 77 next month, so that's possible.

Politicians change their beliefs sometimes... shocking.

Politicians are more apt to change their beliefs when it benefits their party... even more shocking.

Whether this makes them hypocrites or not... who really cares? We all know it happens on both sides.

It's an internet thing. People love to argue hypocrisy in political discussions on the internet. Such arguments would rarely happen face to face 'cause it's so insignificant. Calling a pol a hypocrite doesn't win you any debates. Pols are there to get a job done. In this case, a lifetime appointment. No one cares about hypocrisy. As a Republican I'm glad McConnell figured out a way to get an extra R chosen justice on the high court
