President Donald Trump - J.D. Vance Administration

Yes, they should ... but McConnell didn't want to wait for the 2020 Presidential election in October of 2020, as he did in 2016. You are only talking about what made McConnell's hypocrisy easier to achieve, but hypocrisy is still hypocrisy.

Right. He didn’t want to wait in 2020 but did in 2016. That’s not hypocrisy. In 2020 he was aligned with the president. In 2016 he wasn’t.

Not hypocrisy

He said the senate did not want Obama filing the position and therefore it should be left up to the people. You’re ignoring the context, intentionally to try proclaiming McConnell held some contradictory position. He did not.

The senate did not want Obama to fill that position, so they waited. In 2020, the senate did want Trump fill the position. So they didn’t.

You’re intentionally trying to take a single line out of context.

You are flat-out lying. Mcconnell did not say that. Sen. Chuck Grassley did, and you damn well know it.

Mitch McConnell made no exceptions in 2016 for the President and the party in control of the Senate being from the same party.

His quote literally start with saying the senate did not want Obama filing the position, therefore they would wait.

Are you intentionally ignoring this quote? I’ve posted it probably ten times now

“McConnell Said”…..wtf are you talking about? I’m quoting McConnell over and over again and your takes get more absurd. It clearly states “McConnell said”.

I’ve attached it again and again. You can see that attachment, right?

it is hypocrisy. You are so ignorant.

“I don’t want Obama filing this position in his last year”.

“I do want Trump filing this position in what is potentially his last year”

Those aren’t the same thing. The claim you’re looking for, McConnell saying this should never happen in the last year, simply doesn’t exist

No, it doesn't change anything in regards to what McConnell said in February of 2016. Republicans controlled the Senate in 2016, as well. Mitch McConnell made no exceptions in 2016 for the President and the party in control of the Senate being from the same party. I have addressed that in multiple posts now. I'm not ignoring anything. That is a lie. McConnell said that the American people should decide who fills a vacant Supreme Court seat during a presidential election year in 2016, but then rushed through the confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett in October of 2020.

This is unreal.
This isn't about McConnell. He's going to be gone any day now. This is about Republicans exercising the power they had. If you wanna throw McConnell under the bus, have at it.

If I were McConnell I would have had an up or down vote on Garland late in Obama's term when there'd be no more time to nominate someone else. Win the vote with his Republican majority and then let Trump take it from there. Thus he did not handle it like I would have

That was on a different day than the quote I'm referring to. Mitch McConnell made his reasoning clear on March 20, with this :

"We think the important principle in the middle of this presidential election, which is raging, is that the American people need to weigh in and decide who's going to make this decision." - Sen. Mitch McConnell on March 20, 2016

There is no room for ambiguity in that quote, which you didn't mention. McConnell was saying that we should wait for the 2016 presidential election to take place in 2016, before filling the vacant Supreme Court seat. However, in 2020, he rushed the confirmation of Amy Comey Barrett through in order to be ahead of the 2020 presidential election. That was blatantly hypocritical.

This discussion is about hypocrisy. So, yes, it's about McConnell and how Senate Republicans changed their reasoning from 2016 to 2020, on whether or not a Supreme Court vacancy should be filled during a presidential election year.

Read his quote up above from March 20, 2016. You are conveniently ignoring that.

Call 'em hypocrites if it makes you feel better. It's a small price to pay for a 6-3 majority in the Supreme Court. After seeing Garland as AG, no price would be too high to pay to keep him off the bench. McConnell did this country a great service. If he had to be hypocritical, fine. Whatever. It's politics.

Yes, they were hypocrites and that is the whole point of this stupid discussion, which has dragged on because, incredibly, someone wants to argue otherwise.

And would Garland have been for sale and have a crazy wife like Clarence Thomas? Doubtful.

Irrelevant. If it makes you feel any better, Thomas is on his way out. He will step aside before the midterms so that Trump and a R majority Senate can pick his replacement

You’re intentionally cutting off part of the quote again.

“The Senate has a role to play here. The president nominates, we decide to confirm. We think the important principle in the middle of this presidential year is that the American people need to weigh in and decide who's going to make this decision. Not this lame duck president on the way out the door, but the next president,” McConnell said.

So the senate did not want to confirm, he was a lame duck president, neither of these were factors in 2020.

Those factors change things. That’s why you’re trying hard to ignore them and cutting them out of quotes

You are wrong. That quote is from a different day then the one I posted. You have been absolutely ridiculous through this. I did not cut anything out. The quote I posted was not a part of that. It was even on a different day!

Republicans will be pissed if he pulls a RBG and stays too long. I think he will for that very reason but I could be wrong
I think he loves the trappings of being a Supreme Court Justice too much to step down, while he is still in good health. If he becomes ill, that could change. He will turn 77 next month, so that's possible.

Please let the debate die already. It's obvious that neither of you are going to change your minds, and if you go back and read your posts over the last 24+ hours you'll recognize that it's a disagreement that's really quite insignificant.

Politicians change their beliefs sometimes... shocking.

Politicians are more apt to change their beliefs when it benefits their party... even more shocking.

Whether this makes them hypocrites or not... who really cares? We all know it happens on both sides.

It's an internet thing. People love to argue hypocrisy in political discussions on the internet. Such arguments would rarely happen face to face 'cause it's so insignificant. Calling a pol a hypocrite doesn't win you any debates. Pols are there to get a job done. In this case, a lifetime appointment. No one cares about hypocrisy. As a Republican I'm glad McConnell figured out a way to get an extra R chosen justice on the high court
