Not the same with Joey and a tad over 3 months until our first game and he hasn't even practiced yet. We had a new coach and not much as far as QBs .....Merk was recruited by Heupel and has been in the system for a long while. And Milton was awful his first season and a blessing that Hooker took over. Not that he was great early, but Joe Milton did it.
So, someone who never played QB knows when a QB is ready to go. Sounds about right.Unfortunately VFL Kevin Simon flat out said Jake isnt ready yet today on the Sports Source. He said JA will be the starter in his opinion. Hope both guys and Gmac are all greatly improved in the fall and ready to help the team. Go VOLS
The sad reality is:I don't think Merk is ready yet.
I agreeThe sad reality is:
Merk may not be ready to run the system efficiently yet.
G-Mac most likely isn't ready to run the system yet and needs a big ham sandwich while in the weight room.
Joey Aguilar will have only a few months with the system and receivers. His only QB experience is in the SunBelt Conference which isn't even close to the level of defensive talent he'll see in the SEC and he threw quite a few questionable balls in clips I've seen from the SunBelt games. Some say, "he was behind and had to take chances" as though UT is going to be an absolute beast in the SEC and not get behind. Do you think that's the reality for us this year? He'll be behind quite a bit and need to take chances.
There is a very good chance NONE of the QBs on the UT roster are really ready to run Heupel's offense nor be a starting SEC QB.
I'm not trying to be negative here. I'm laying out reality. The QB situation is a long way from good.

The only assumption in my reading of the QB situation is stated: Merk MAY not be ready to run the system. He may be ready but there's little doubt he wasn't close to taking the job from Nico this season. And Nico's performance was marginal in the system. That is NOT a reality, it is an assumption from the dark side.

G-Mac needs weight and needs experience.
Joey hasn't faced much competition other than SunBelt Conference teams, has thrown questionably into traffic a lot, and will have from May until early October to get ready to play against an SEC school using a new system.
Other than Merk possibly being ready or possibly not being ready, where are the assumptions?
Look, it's not me making assumptions about our QB position, Urban Meyer has a couple of Nattys from a couple of teams and he's cited a severe QB problem at UT.Was that not the MAIN point of your post? Glad we added a guy with potential to a two man, SO/FR room, but doubt they are not throwing the job open for competition. Like to know what they told MERK and GMAC during the search. All CJH picked guys. My assumption is the best man wins. Joey has some experience, MERK a year in the system, GMAC a high ceiling after a few meals and lots of weight room time.
One element of a better year OVERALL on that side of the ball with coordinated SOLID play out of the OL, RB, and WR rooms. Just have that feeling that the pressure of an under performing field general being gone will work out. US against the doubting world can be a unifier. HOPEFUL not BOASTFUL. Lots of pieces available. A little synergy can go a long way.

Coach Heupel had evaluated Nico in the Spring as firmly having the QB1 spot over Merk and G-Mac. There's no indication Nico left because he was being pressed by them but RATHER that he thought he was so valuable to the offense that he couldn't be replaced. In the end, we all saw it as Coach Heupel refusing the "shake down" attempt, not saying "sorry Nico, you got beat out in the Spring." Had he stayed, no one doubted Nico would have started at UT.
At UCLA, Coach Foster went out and got Joey Aguilar and he was the presumed starter there UNTIL Nico signed. Coach Foster evaluated Nico as better than Aguilar and immediately Joey hit the portal after Nico was signed because he was told or he knew he couldn't beat out Nico. Had Nico not come, no one doubted Joey Aguilar would have started at UCLA.
My original point was: Nico leaving was not a good thing and replacing him with someone with no starting P-4 experience isn't a good thing either. That's the assumption of Coach Meyer, Coach Heupel, and Coach Foster....... not some random Volnation guy.
Nico was in the "way too early" Heisman conversation for sophomores with potential. If he'd not pulled his shakedown crap, there would be a buzz on VN that "he's going to come into his own this year."Did Nico ever meet any rational expectations in our system? Any reason to believe he would this year? Did not take CJH long to cut bait after the late extortion attempt. All kinds of potentials for our room without him this year. Not many hard probabilities. Could be bad, could be the best thing for both him and us.
Kind of hoping MERK makes it hard to not start him rather than a one year rental. That is one of those potential's. Good with Joey balling out too. Can’t fret over a kid that took the path he did, whether it was his idea or not. I hope he has a healthy disappointing conclusion to his career at UCLA or his next stop.
