Tennessee QB Joey Aguilar Tackles Fourth Offense in 28 Months

Joey is a one and done guy. His eligibility is this yr unless he redshirts and he didn't come here to do that. As other posters have predicted he will start. I predict he and Merk will get reps during the 1st game and that's it for Merk.
Second game vs ETSU should see all 3 QBs getting playing time.
Third game vs UGA…well…

Merk needs to gtfo now. With Brandon in, JA in and Mac not going anywhere (yet), he's toast.
It's strange that--after a disappointing season with Nico, followed by his sudden departure--we still prophesy confidently about what quarterbacks will do and how they'll perform in Years One, Two, or Three.

Milton won the position in practice and had the entire staff and team convinced he was the starter... and yet, when a game time opportunity appeared, Hooker bloomed-metamorphosed-decloaked and never looked back.

The joy of sports is that the movie's script is being written in real time, and no one controls the ending.

Right.

Merk's history.

Why? They were planning on sitting this year behind Nico anyway...nothing really changed. One year veteran coming in to replace Nico and then open competition following year. I see nothing changed in their plans.
Correct. Nothing changed initially because they thought Nico was stating. Once he left, opportunity arose for the both of them. And then a new QB comes in with no knowledge of the playbook. One may take it that my coach doesn’t have confidence in my abilities, so they may leave.

I'm not convinced we are going to have just 1 QB this year. I don't think Joey will be ready to start the season and Merk and Mac are not ready for prime time. I could see all 3 splitting time against the cupcakes and then have the strongest one start against the SEC. I think that this is out of pure necessity, not desire. Joey will be heavily favored but if he throws picks, he'll get yanked.
Not sure what makes you think this. Heupel has always rode his starter, even when many of us thought it was time for a change(see Joe Milton). This is JAs job to lose. He will need all the experience he can get against the cupcakes.

If JA starts and holds the job and we beat Syracuse soundly. Watching Heupel over the years he will play JA 3 + quarter vs ETSU no matter the score because he needs reps. If it's a blowout Merk will come in and run plays for a series and maybe 2 series and then JMac would come in to hand the ball off to run the clock out. That has been Heupel's MO so far.

Or they MAY have figured out we could not enter the season with 2 viable QB’s and Coach covered the plan. This guy can’t hurt them after the next window.

What do you mean "ride his starter". How many games did Heupel "ride" Joe Milton?

Milton won the 2021 starter job based on fall practice. We won his first game by 32 points. Should Heupel have pulled him then? I don't remember anyone calling for a change at that point, but maybe some did.

Milton started the second game, against Pitt, and was injured in the 2nd quarter and Hooker took over. Hooker started every other game that Hooker was available to start for the rest of 2021 and 2022.

So when did Heupel "ride his starter", and for how many games did he do that?

Also, HH didn't exactly impress in the OW game. Glad someone is telling it exactly the way it happened. Well did.

You realize Milton did start the year after that, right? Let me introduce you to the year of 2023 where Joe had a very pedestrian year. We watched him throw footballs to the moon while trying to connect on 20 yard passes. “Joe can throw an orange a million yards”. Plenty were calling for Nico, or anyone to get a chance for that matter. Joe kept trotting out onto the field until the bowl game where Nico started and looked pretty good. That gave us excitement going into 24, of which Nico never measured up to.

So next time you try to make a cute snide post maybe know who started which years. Google is your friend. It’s even free. You’re welcome.

I didn't mention 2023 because it wasn't even a consideration. Nor should it be.

So, after watching second year Nico, you think Heupel should have started first year Nico over Milton in 2023?

Guess you forgot about all the bad drops by the WRs with Milton. Most in here said well it’s because he threw too hard blah, blah, blah. Well the WRs had butterfingers under Nico as well. Milton was better than you think.

People saying Merk leaving in 2026 is kind of comical.
You do realize he's the likely starter next season if he's QB2 behind Aguilar this year.

After 26 it gets REALLY interesting because then you are juggling Merk, GMac, and Brandon...that's an impressive QB room, but in today's game one of them isn't going to stick around.

We're going to be surprised by how well he does in the offense

Nico was overrhyped i think this could be a hooker 2.0 situation where a "back up" steps up and takes over (i jknow he's new to the roster but point being, I think we'll be better with whomever is QB1 this season than if we kept Nico)

Why isnt Jake ready for prime time? Why wouldnt he be as ready as Nico was?

I believe I've read some pretty good analysis on his interceptions. The writers of the article were convinced Aguilar playing in the Heupel system will be much more accurate and throw far less interceptions. Yes he is talented and accurate and the offense he will run this year will help him in that category. A lot of his interceptions at App St were basically trying to put the team on his back and win or make a big come back. Lets let the season play out then judge. :)
So many are judging out highly touted 4star recruit Jake Merklinger as an also ran with no proof. Why we would not judge Aguilar, who has shown he throws a lot of ints vs lesser competition?

Idk who will win the qb battle, but Merklinger should have a significant advantage.

Well of course. If he had then 2024 would have been Nicos second year and he would have been the Nico "some of us" knew he would be. AND he would still be here and we win the Natty this year.

FACT.

You're basing this off of what?
The addition of Joey Aguilar and the search and offers of the caliber of players that lead up to Joey Aguilar.

Heup went after what he thought was the best available qbs. We were never looking for a backup. Our qb room is currently filled with backups. We needed a starter. All the open competition talk was coach speak.

Sorry I just don't buy it. This kid had no offers out of HS, went to Juco, had exactly 1 P5 offer coming out of Juco, then proceeded to throw 24 picks in 2 seasons, then transfers to a 5-7 football juggernaut UCLA. I get that he's thrown for a lot of yards, I'm just not convinced he is more talented then the 4 and 5 stars we currently have on the roster. Of course JH went for the best available QB in the portal, there weren't any good ones actually in the portal. If Joey is actually able to beat out Merk, imo that says more about Merk than it does Joey.
