The main reason for it was COVID. Pre-Covid, the first Trump administration created ~$2.5-3T deficits in the first 3 years, then COVID arrived. I wish it was a surplus, but we have not had one of those since the turn of the century.

He signed off on the spending, bragged about it and then promised more than the dems if reelected. He didn't care about the debt then and still doesn't
