Saban has called for the power 5 schools to only schedule each other. I don't know, the FCS schools depend on us for pretty much their ENTIRE athletic budget, and a tune up game is good for the fanbase and the team.. Maybe it could go something like this; one FCS opponent to start the season, then three straight conference opponents, then another FCS game for Homecoming, then the rest of the season. Everyone gets a warmup and there's always a chance for an upset. What say ye?

I’m 100% in agreement with Saban. The games are the product. How many other industries intentionally have a business model where 25% of their product is complete garbage? The goal should be to make the product as good as it can be every week. It’s also not the SEC’s responsibility to make sure FCS schools can fund their athletic departments.

I don’t mind one tuneup game, but all mad it should be all better opponents. If this does happen, I could see some of these smaller football schools, closing up the football program because they won’t have the money to run it.

Maybe the NFL should start scheduling a CFL team in the regular season as a "tune up" but still have it count for the win-loss record?

Maybe the NBA should toss a few college teams or developmental league teams a year in their regular schedule to "tune up" but count the results?

You either want to present a quality product or you don't. If you want "tune up" games, play pre-season or exhibition games before the regular season. They should not be part of your season or the Power schools are just diluting their record.

The time of the cupcake games has passed. Put a quality game on TV every week. They're paying $50M a year to your school to play decent, competitive games, not massacre some nobody.

I'd be fine with it so long as the games don't count and they aren't televised like the Orange and White game.

Saban’s model was pretty good; for them anyway. Play against a marquee but lesser opponent to begin the season then an FCS. Makes for better fan support than scheduling UTC then Georgia State with maybe a team like Akron placed somewhere in there.

ALL of those P5 schools want at least 7 home games -- in some cases 8. The only way to get there is to play one or two G5 or FCS schools.

Quite a few G5 schools want 7 home games too.

Totally agree, I also think the spring game could solve some of this or play seasons staggered to put eyes on non power 5 when there is t competition

Maybe eliminate the games against FCS schools but not group of 5 schools/FBS schools.

So, you are saying do away with about 1/4 or more of FCS teams then? Face it-that $1.5 million they get for taking a sanctioned beating basically pays the lions share for their entire athletic department.

Some have decent fan support in the community, but for many there's not much revenue involved when they play other FCS teams. Last time I went to an FCS vs FCS game the ticket was $5 and there were maybe 1000 people there. I would wager many of the tickets were freebies including the students. Throw in a couple bucks for a dog and a drink. Maybe a program to see the players names. Parking was free. Walked out spending under $20 for 3 hours of live entertainment.

Many G5 school wouldn't make it either honestly. The two or so 5 games they get a year go a long ways towards paying the bills.

I'm not saying the way things are set up is perfect. Far from it. Start wiping out teams en masse though and the game in general is gonna suffer in the long run. Less kids playing football and maybe not having even a local school to root for and go see a game occasionally is not the way to grow the game.

When football first started at colleges, was it a requirement that it support itself financially?

Most schools STILL don't make money from their athletic department. So, making no money puts them equal to the History or Geology Department, right?

It's straight socialism to expect the money making schools to support the athletic programs of lesser schools.

Schools drop programs all the time that aren't successful, can't be supported financially, lack support from students enrolling....... why should sports look to get a hand out when other programs can't?

I never watch cupcake games. Usually, it is just a beat down. And when one of these cupcakes have the gall to win? It is humiliating. It is a no win scenario. Oh sure, some of your backups get plenty of experience and exposure, but that is about the only real reason to schedule those guys. However, it matters little how I feel about it. The one thing you mentioned that requires explanation is: How the Hell is this "good" for the fan base? Maybe, mudhen, is something you imagined after a few beers too many, or listening to too much of the jargon provided by sports commentators Like Herbstreit. If I am gonna waste time watching a game, it includes the Vols. And if there is a targeting call, I tune out. But as to what Saban said? Even though I hate agreeing with him for obvious reasons, I think he is right. But of course he is gonna say this kinda thing. He is retired. And because of that, I say it is an opinion of convenience for him.

In response to your second paragraph, it's not remotely the same thing. The history and geology department aren't providing full scholarships to every student choosing those majors.

I totally buy your idea of not wanting to play a FCS team. Some of the reasoning and analogies you're using are dumb AF

I think College Football should consider a preseason game against FCS schools. College football is the only sport, only sport, at any competitive level , that doesn’t have any sort of exhibition or preseason game. It’s kind crazy to think that week 1 your season has the potential to be close to ruined w/o have any sort of tune up. I think this would serve several purposes, including to help keep these small schools athletic departments afloat.

It's probably going to happen. But Saban is an idiot for saying that. That will give more money to give to these 20 year olds. Not only are they making more money than most working families in the United States, they get free room and board, free education. We could at least make them pay for tuition. The Power 4 Conf are going to be a mini NFL. Which stands for National Felon League. Billionaires will own the teams, 3rd string QB's want be able to play. Money destroys everything. 1 Timothy 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

I think it should be more common to have Power Teams play each other but I think you still need the easy warm-up games for cheaper tickets.

With 4 OOC games, I think 2 should be against Power teams.

I feel like there wasn't enough cross-conference play in the current format.

If we go to 3 Non-Conference, I am fine with just keeping 1 game against Power teams and 2 against Non-Power.
