OldTimer’s Dugout - Off Topic Thread

So let’s remove Roberto Alomar, Vida Blue, and Orlando Cepeda from the HOF while we’re at it due to their transgressions.

I had a conversation with my kid today, he mentioned the subject. I simply explained who he was on the field and how the things he did off the field over shadow the things he did on it.

If the criteria for being in the HOF is based on what he did on the field, especially before the steroid era, then he should be in. If it’s based on other things, then there’s quite a few, as you mentioned…he’s paid a price, of his own making, but how much is too much? That’s the only debate. I dunno.

Roberto Alomar is currently on the MLB ineligible list but is still in the HOF. So what’s the difference? Right, there isn’t one.
Ha. Changing the goal posts. Interesting as the topic was Pete Rose and he absolutely doesn’t belong anywhere near the HOF. Personally I think statutory rape of a 14 yo is enough to keep him out alone. You add in betting on baseball, it’s ridiculous that he would ever be considered.

Not changing the goalposts. Just stating facts. Straight from the BBWAA website, you tell me what number 5 says. So why is Alomar given preferential treatment of staying in the HOF? MLB found evidence he committed sexual assault and banned him. It’s a double standard and Rose should have been put in as soon as the Hall said Alomar would remain a member.

The wording of #1 seems awkward.

This is an extraordinary photo of Redland Field in 1922. The image gives a rare early view of the Reds ballpark in exceptional clarity. About a year ago, I posted a similar photo taken from a slightly different vantage point by the same aerial photographer. However, this image gives us a better view of the Harrison Avenue Viaduct, built in 1908. If you look carefully, you will see a streetcar on the viaduct right where it crosses Western Avenue. You will also notice the railroad trestle curving off to the left of the photo over the Millcreek. I believe this is a B&O line by this time, but it was built by the Cincinnati, Hamilton & Dayton Railroad. If you follow Western Avenue (runs along the outfield wall) north toward the viaduct, you'll see a sandlot ballfield. It's hard to tell from the angle, but this is probably either at the intersection of Dayton St or Bank St.

Now on to Redland Field. My earlier photo did not show the Sun Deck (No lights yet!) as clearly, and note the two flag poles inside the field of play on the warning track. Much of the advertising on the outfield wall is visible, including Coca-Cola, Western Bank and Trust, Dolly Varden Chocolates, and someone selling underwear. One sign prominently displays the name "A. Ehrmantraut", but I am uncertain as to what that business was. At the time, there was an Ehrmantraut Bros. optometrist in Cincinnati...maybe this was to encourage the umpires to improve their vision!
That field later became Crosley Field where the Reds played until 1970

If my memory is right that lady lives in Memphis & was asked about the crime
that goes on in her area & why have they not called the police & she says "ain't
nobody got time for dat" while trying to dodge bullets.
I like that someone turned it into a short music video.
She's a gem.

I'll have to do some looking to see if she did another interview about not calling the police.

I lived in Memphis for two years & only had one scary thing happen to me.
Now, the thing is for some to drive on the roads & take shots at innocent drivers
who are going to & from work or those just passing through. Its insane there.

Again, the convo was about Rose. I’ve pointed out my opinion of why Rose should never sniff the HOF. Other players have nothing to do with the decision on Rose. It’s irrelevant

For those not “hip” to the phrase:

I’ve never heard that and I don’t find it persuasive. I think it means what it says. It’s describing a shack, after all. And it doesn’t make sense to me as a euphemism for that.

Honestly when I saw 1919 in the question. Please tell me you’ve seen Field of Dreams.
So proud of inventing my very own baseball trivia question, then suddenly busted (!) as still a Newbie. 😂😭 No I haven’t.

That series is what I was reading about. I remember it in completely vague terms from American history, but I didn’t know any of the details.

To be fair…that Shoeless Joe reference is not the answer to your question, but I started looking through those years for commonality. Assuming, in SEC play, we had to…we’d be and everyone would be cooked. That’s an amazing nugget.

What I meant was that people in here have been talking about Shoeless Joe Jackson and (mostly) Pete Rose now being eligible for Baseball Hall of Fame. So I looked up Jackson (who I'd never heard of) and some of those years, and that's how I came across the trivia worthy nugget.
