OldTimer’s Dugout - Off Topic Thread

I know the sport is not popular in the SEC, but it is out west: I read today that Grand Canyon University eliminated its men’s volleyball program, which apparently has a solid history and had recently been to the men’s volleyball final four. It was a non revenue sport.
IIRC, GCU is a for profit school

Football has the best argument because there the ones bringing in all the big bucks. But it surely has to share the wealth for everyone to be cohesive.
They could always count the total number of scholarship players in all sports and figure out the percentage based on the total number. Then use the percentage to distribute the $20.5 MM.
Looking at the numbers that may be exactly what they did

Not everyone is a free agent twice a year with zero restricted movement. Heck, TN has 2 juniors who are on their 3rd team in 3 years. It was NEVER like this.
True that. The money has always been available though. The portal was never necessary and was the ncaa’s biggest failure.

I don't see how they will ever be a way to stop this. Can't stop someone from bettering themselves to make more money. I don't believe that they can even make them sit out a year with all the new rulings. Unless they can sign them to a hard contract with buy outs just as they do coaches. And many want go for that type of contract.

Agreed. Contracts are the only answer at the point. The contract may be you get this sum a year, but forfeit X if you leave, thus freeing up $$$ for replacements.

AI says it better.

Agreed. At this stage, implementing contracts is the most effective solution. The contract could stipulate a fixed annual compensation, with a clause that requires the forfeiture of a specified amount (X) if the individual departs prematurely. This approach would free up funds to secure suitable replacements.

Sure they can stop it. Implement collective bargaining and make them employees. Or have “claw back clauses” and financial penalties in contracts if they aren’t honored.

I was there and had a perfect view. It was more than that. Several Vandy players were yelling and cursing and pointing directly at UT players in our dugout (instead of celebrating with each other). They absolutely provoked it and it was over the top directed at TN’s dugout. There’s no way Ensley should have ignored it jogging in from 3rd base.
Doesn’t really matter if it was provoked. Still shouldn’t have even entertained them. They were looking for a reaction and got exactly what they wanted. Just ignore them and try to focus on finishing above .500 in your last season.

This article sheds some light on Tony V’s temperature with the team. Unless this is not real.
At this point just switch Loy to starter and use Phillips as the Game 3 starter or use him out of the pen. Having 2 lefty starters back to back days could have its benefits and cut down on the stolen bases.

Mavs won the right to take Cooper Flagg. I guess all those upset Mavs fans can kick rocks now. Kyrie, AD, and Flagg could turn into a nice trio. It looks better on paper than Kyrie, Luka, and Flagg.

Spurs may end up trading and packaging that number 2 pick to get a nice player. They already have back to back rookies of the year on the roster and will want to give their new coach everything they can to compete.

Mavericks should trade #1 pick, Derrick Lively, Daniel Gaffird and Max Christie to Bucks for Giannis. Kyrie, Giannis and AD wow .

Send #2 and #14 pick plus Stephon Castles to Celtics for Jayden Brown and Derrick White...

That could work but it’s no guarantee he wants to go to Dallas. As far as winning goes, his other best opportunities after a trade would probably be the Thunder or Rockets. You also don’t want a depleted roster of the new team you go to and those two teams have plenty of young talent to spare.
