All things STOCKS

Theft is a problem at Target. I formerly worked with a guy who worked at Target as a part time 2nd job. He said if someone carried a TV out the door without paying they weren't allowed to approach them. I don't know. Maybe other stores have that same policy.
Also, that was about 8-10 years ago so that policy might have changed.
I was just borrowing it!

Happened 15 mins ago: China’s Vice Premier He Lifeng and the Chinese delegation has walked out midway through the U.S.-China trade talks in Geneva with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and the U.S. delegation without giving any reasons for their swift exit.

Shrink is a sign of bad management. All retailers experience shrink. Well run ones manage through and mitigate it. Others dont....

You dont hear about Costco, Home Depot, etc with major shrink issues. Its because they are well run....

Lowes sells the same crap as Home Depot and in similar locations. Why is their shrink significantly worse? It's because they are from top to bottom run much worse than HD.
Interested to hear what Home Depot does differently than Lowe’s to prevent theft. I was in Home Depot last weekend buying some romex wire and it was all locked up - had to get assistance to purchase. Lady who helped me had to walk it to the cash register. I asked her whether theft was a big problem in their store. She said it was corporate policy to not challenge folks walking out without paying. Hard to imagine how that policy is preventing more theft than any other stores?

Most shrink is internal, not external.

Usually the better retailers have better processes to prevent inadvertent shrink and employee shrink...

Your prior post was quite definitive as if you were in the know how HD prevents theft better than Lowe’s? Would love to hear more detail on this since my experience says a thief can walk out of HD without resistance (which I personally think is ridicules). If retailers are losing a lot to theft, then hiring security would seems cost effective.

HD reports lower shrink as a percentage of sales than LOW in their 10K. HD's operating margin is stronger. They are selling the same stuff in the same markets.

Remember, most shrink isnt from outside thieves (less than 30% of shrink) but its from internal theft or really bad internal processes (more than 70% of shrink).

Oops sorry, I don't know if it's the years or the miles.
I posted earlier that Target would not confront thieves. My co-worker worked part time at Home Depot, not Target. He said the same thing Walkenvol was told.

We may have a China deal tomorrow. If so, ATH in June are possible.

I’d guess something temporary to get a little bit of commerce going. Then the markets will freak out again when the next deadline for a definitive deal approaches.

I’m thinking long XLI for the LT if it pulls back a little for a better entry point.

And a defense ETF or two. ITA. PPA. XAR. SHLD. DFEN (3x). Probably not ARKX though. I don’t anticipate world peace commencing anytime soon. Even after India and Pakistan have simmered down and Russia/Ukraine could accept a deal.

Might sell some more PLTR calls. It’s awfully expensive for another big move up. Possibly some 5/23s. Analysts are all over a huge move up or down from here.

Actually Adobe (ADBE) interests me right now. 25x. 19x forward. Off $200 from the $588 52 WH. I’ve had ASML on my radar for a while, but this trade tariff stuff might hurt their bottom and top lines for a while. Plus China could steal their technology.

Like both ADBE and ASML long term at current prices....

I went in Lowe's Friday evening, the first time in a while, for a gift card. It seemed to me that there weren't any cashiers by the door. There were several self-service checkouts and a roaming guy to help customers. I didn't know how to activate a gift card on the self-service machine so I had to get help.

I have a hard time believing that kind of system saves more money in fewer employees than it costs in increased theft.

No deal w China but 90 day pause. Market loves the news but will be interesting to see reaction after market opens.

I hope you didn’t really anticipate a deal being reached during the first meeting..stuff like this is very complex especially with all of the stuff China has gotten away with so easily for so many years..they’re not just going to let that slip away without some kind of middle ground.i still think China goes back to what they were doing even if a deal is reached.

They can never be trusted. We need to scale way back “partnering” with them. And use our leverage to extend that stance to ANY country that enables their crap. It’s not as simple as having equal tariff rates with the economic allies. The CCP had been exploiting the USMCA to dodge direct tariffs. Therefore Mexico needed to be dealt with as China’s proxy.

Edit: I said to dodge direct tariffs but what I really mean is to play by the rules. I don’t look at tariffs as a revenue generator. More of a method to deal with those creating chaos and/or enabling it. Like doing nothing to reduce the flow of Fentanyl or taking de facto bribes from the cheaters and thieves (mainly China) that are stealing our technology, dumping product and hurting our manufacturing base, and seizing territory for military outposts.

Bessent states that they'll likely have another round of talks in the "coming weeks". Positive news to start the week.

I bought into a lot of China Friday after selling out the last Friday. Bought a good amount of BIDU and KWEB.
