President Donald Trump - J.D. Vance Administration

Didn't Biden already do that and then Trump rolled it back?
Trump did something similar to this in his first term but it got held up in federal courts and Biden eventually axed it.

CNN — May 11. 2025
President Donald Trump announced Sunday that he plans to resurrect a controversial policy from his first term that aims to reduce drug costs by basing payments for certain medicines on their prices in other countries.

His prior rule, called “Most Favored Nation,” was finalized in late 2020 but blocked by federal courts and rescinded by then-President Joe Biden in 2021. It would have applied to Medicare payments for certain drugs administered in doctors’ offices. However, it is unclear what payments or drugs the new directive would apply to.

Really excited to see what other price controls this conservative govt has in store.
I find myself conflicted about this. Considering how much money the pharmaceutical companies take from the government for RandD it’s kinda hard to tell the government they have no say in prices.

"Big pharma" is not operating in a truly free market getting billions in gov't (taxpayer) subsidies then charge those taxpayers high cost.
So instead of turning off the faucet you implement price controls? It's the govt messing up the market

Not at all. The govt just needs to get out of it. We're the sickest population in the world and it's where big pharma makes all their profit. They need to be shut down

no gov't subsidies prices would shoot sky high.

farmers have always claimed if they did not get subsidies they would go out of business.

There's no easy fix for it. Some drugs cost an obscene amount of money. On the other hand, it's very expensive to discover a new one and get it through trials. Hopefully AI will help quite a bit on the latter.

Agreed but it’s so much larger than that.

It’s absolutely ridiculous what big pharmaceutical companies do. They’re the number one industry spending on advertising…..for things that require a Dr to prescribe. Not sure how we would address that legally either.

The health problems in the United States has a lot more to do with food than it does pharmaceutical…but that’s a whole other rabbit hole.

It’s been happening for decades with the Medicare drug price list. Which will be the price enforcement mechanism utilized here. You’re not wrong but in this case at least it isn’t an additional control it’s a modification of an existing control.

No I’m not propping it up just explaining what I’ve read in it since it was announced.
