I was listening to the VQ podcast today and Ramey, Hubbs, and Price were all saying how shocked and uncharacteristic it has been that Barnes has apparently not been pumping the brakes on the Nate Ament hype train during the Big Orange Caravan. Said they have never heard him talk about a kid like this, this early.

The House vs NCAA settlement deadline is tomorrow. The NCAAs lead attorney said he was going to present an agreement with the judge showing that every athlete who lost a roster spot from the initial deal will now be given a chance to get the roster spot back. Assuming the judge grants final approval tomorrow, and Tennessee opts in, 15 scholarships will become officially official.

It would be weird going from having barely enough players to put 5 on the floor at times this past season to having 14 or 15 capable players on the roster next year.

I guess in the era of constant roster turnover, it’s hard to judge expectations for a team with basically an entirely new roster. But I just find the stark contrast in rankings to be interesting. Some people are very low on this team, while some are obviously bought in.

Last year with what was returning there was such a high floor. Next year there's very high ceiling if Ament plays like top 5 draft pick. Will be fun getting reports once he's on campus.

Oh I'm sure those preseason reports will have him being the second coming of Kevin Durant. I'd take those very lightly as they always seem extremely embellished. I remember when Derrick Walker was the next Oliver Miller...lol

I love and appreciate what the VQ guys do. But man, they just can’t be taken serious in pre-season player evaluations for Football or Basketball.

I know a big issue is they HAVE to create some kind of content pretty frequently. Which leads them to have to write more words than necessary about guys.

But yeah. Oof.

and they are somehow worse in Football. Long history of glazing guys that never even get meaningful snaps.

I'll tell you guys something, it is such a pleasure coming over to this thread, where topics are discussed in an intelligent manner and there is a sense of humor and understanding that this isn't life altering stuff.

In direct contrast to the football forum, where most of the posters take the results of games, recruiting, and everything else related to the program as a personal matter. We are coming off of the best stretch of UT football in 20 years, and Heupel is routinely criticized to the point that you would think he is on the hot seat. Pure negativity is seen there as "keeping it real". Not a lot of fun.

Well, the football forum drive byes will show up around mid-season. Fahr Barnes! Regular Season Rick. He’s just collecting a paycheck as he coasts to retirement. $5 million. Hasn’t been to the Final Four since he had Durant (even though Durant’s year wasn’t when he made the FF). Hadn’t won anything. He was going to run off to UCLA. And early on… he wasn’t signing ANY top recruits. They’ll circle around soon enough with their tripe.

Boy I could write a dissertation on this topic.

My TLDR is that it’s pretty analogous with the evolving American culture. It’s anti-intellectualism. Dunning-Kruger gone wild.

People coming to emotional conclusions first, unable to understand or comprehend their own biases for a variety of reasons. Who then try to rationalize those emotional conclusions with a presumption of being correct, rather than use basic principles of logic.

You get a top 5 prospect part of your job is keep their name out there so the draft stock stays high.

While personally lower on Heupel than most of his staunch supporters, I do recognize that he is a brilliant football mind and Xs and Os coach.

My hesitancy on him lies more in the program management areas in terms of staff loyalty and all around handling of personnel (recruits, transfers, current players, and staff).

It was disappointing to hear that he's not exactly keen on the idea of adding a GM to the staff because I think that's exactly what he needs and would free him up to do more of what he is excellent at, which is coaching football.

Still, I'm all in on him until he stops producing 10-win seasons like he has in two of the last three years. Another one this year would be a small miracle and a real credit to him.

Even if you keep a rather neutral approach, you're often berated by thise in one side of the issue or the other because you don't toe the company line in agreement with their radical point of view. On the whole, I really do believe this forum is more open-minded to the opposing view unless it is just way off base. I saw that, the NCAA tried some shenanigans in saying that schools could choose not to allow players back, kind of defeating the whole point the judge made about guaranteeing them spots.

Where did you see the quotes about Heup not being in favor of a GM? Haven't been around the past few days so I might have missed that topic floating around.

Also surprised/not surprised by it. I can imagine him needing to give final approval on any incoming players especially on offense with it being so system-driven and personal to him. But also have seen some stuff about him being worn out by the job and the non-football related aspects which I'd think a GM could easily take on and lighten the workload
