2025 Transfer Portal Thread

If you listened to Basilio and other posters, Freeman was scared off by Ament commitment. Was not a money decision. Pearl got him to believe he would not be starter here and would there. Another poster was right on this. Weren’t getting Freeman after Ament.
My point was that I see Freeman/Rice as a better investment than Ament for a single year next season. If we pass on Ament, I think we could likely have gotten both Freeman and Rice.

This assumes we were ever gonna match the Nova and USC offer for Rice. And I’m not sure that’s a valid assumption regardless of Ament.

It’s been said Ament is being financed separately, as well.

So not sure this was a zero sum thing

Didn't know that. I'd assumed if we hadn't committed so much to Ament, we could have put a stronger offer on Rice. Having said that, we do have a lot to offer beyond money. Wonder how the NBA sees Rice? I can see his choice being based on his NBA chances.

Well Ament being separately financed could have been false. Just something that’s been shared by some folk so who knows really.

Might a little basket BVS when it comes to 5 star talent expectations too. If Ament is more Tobias than Phillips, with the pieces that are/will be put around him, if he’s more Tobias that takes less of the burden to bring in a really nice shooting guard. Imo

I can see that reasoning. But each year passes and it easily could be Barnes last year. I would rather create a team that has highest ceiling/ win now then in an investment that could take couple seasons to reach its potential.

Freeman was playing D2 hoops. We have no idea if he will do anything. Cade Tyson as someone pointed out could not play when he stepped up to bigger league.

And Cade was D1. People’s obsession with him is crazy and the fact that they’d want him over Ament is going to be hilarious one day… I’ll remember and bump it when Ament balls out and Freeman likely transfers again next year because he doesn’t get the minutes he thought he would get.

Also why would we overpay Rice significantly more than Gillespie??

With NIL there is no reason to not aim for the top, every year. There is no longer a reason to simply hope players stick around for future seasons. If they do, then great, but that seems to be due to random luck more than anything else.

Good point, but to my mind Freeman was more physically mature and adjusted to college life than Ament. Figured the ROI would be more immediate with Rice/Freeman vs Ament/plan B. Then again, who the heck am I to question a HOF coach like Rick Barnes? If he's sold on Ament, that's good enough for me. Still hoping we can get a really solid 2 guard tho. Really believe we need another good shooter or three.
