How big is our knife?

Probably a dumb question, but is there any sense that our efforts with Rice and Freeman could impact Ament's decision? As in, if we land those two, do our prospects improve because he knows he'll be walking into a situation with a more talented roster? Or is he just operating on a separate (and more independent) calculus?

Tbh no one knows, not even Ament himself. If that's the case though it wouldn't bode well for us imo. I think Duke certainly will have a better roster than us.

Interesting that Rice has become such a desirable recruit...

Must be because Maryland was a top 10 team, cause neither his size nor his stats really jump off the page compared to some other SGs ranked higher than him.

That’s more about housing costs. Drug addict on the street vs drug addict in a trailer. Not saying the trailer isn’t preferable, but the problem is just more well-hidden.

Regardless, I hope he gets stuck in a massive LA traffic jam for hours and can’t wait to leave!
I hope he gets stuck in that traffic and chipotle hits his gut without grace.

Really? A sophomore averaging 14 pts a game for a team that finished 9th in the AP poll really stands out to me. I value it way higher than those mid-major guys scoring 19 a game or whatever

Rodney Rice is desirable for us because he has chemistry already with our starting point guard... he was a sophomore averaging more than what most of our leading scorers every year average before Lanier & Knecht... Rice is also from a proven Power 5 conference program who made it to the Sweet 16 & also stayed in the top 15 AP poll... he's also considered a consensus top 10 available player in the portal currently and fits the position that we need to fill perfectly... not exactly sure what you are seeing that would make the coaching staff not want him at this point at shooting guard. But he's SG target 1 for us for a reason...

Okay... what about these non mid-major guys

A: 6'7" 18.4 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 2.4 apg, 42.7% FG, 32.1% 3PT
B: 6'7" 19.2 ppg, 7.2 rpg, 2.0 apg, 43.9% FG, 33.6% 3PT
C: 6'6" 17.7 ppg, 7.0 rpg, 3.7 apg, 55.7% FG, 40% 3PT
D: 6'4" 11.9 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 1.0 apg, 45.6% FG, 39.5% 3PT
E: 6'6" 15.1 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 3.6 apg, 43.9% FG, 34.0 % 3PT
F: 6'8" 12.2 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 1.1 apg, 43.7% FG, 32.9% 3PT

Those are all wing options still available not coming from mid-major. I just didn't expect Rice to be the hard to close option of the 3 we're chasing...

I know exactly why we want him. I'm just stating it's interesting to me that between Freeman, Ament, and Rice he's the one we're in a "knife fight" with that keeps getting bigger offers shoved his way.

Yea, I was trying to find stats on comparable players. I think his 37% from 3 stands out on a SS team. C (above) is a nice stat line.

Who is C? Those are some impressive, stat-stuffing numbers.

If true about BJ Freeman, sign me up based on my 2 minute scouting analysis of him lol. Good shooter with decent size who only got better once AZ State entered into Big 12 play, which was a very tough conference this year.
