Still early in the season but some observations from this horrific start:
The (very little) Good:
Ozuna continues to be a beast. Career high EV and BB% so far. Hopefully the hip thing doesn't linger.
Austin Riley is posting careers bests in virtually every power category while playing great defense so far. Maybe my $50 MVP bet will actually win.
Odd year Ozzie is heating up. .925 OPS in his last 50 at bats. One of the few hitters we can't complain about for a change.
Aside from the 5th inning yesterday, Schwelly has looked like the best pitcher on the planet. Excited to watch this kid.
Sean Murphy has a .182 BABIP which suggests he's actually been hitting the ball better than his 1.026 OPS shows. K% needs to come down though.
While you would expect Olson to end up on the Bad list, I just can't justify it. He has a career high BB%, Hard Hit%, and EV to go along with a career low K%. The problem is a crazy low BABIP. He's gonna go on a tear shortly and we're gonna win a lot of ball games because of it.
Nick Allen is sporting a career best EV, hard hit%, LD%, and GB%. While those are encouraging improvements, he isn't gonna maintain a .400 BABIP. Enjoy this while it lasts. Decent chance that we are SS shopping at the deadline
The Bad:
Chris Sale doesn't look the same. Granted much of it is luck with a crazy .404 BABIP allowed. But the HR rate is also up and his velocity has been down. Hopefully just a bump in the road and he gets back on track, but we are going nowhere this year if he isn't an ace level pitcher.
The rest of the SP group: AJ has been meh. Mullet is also meh as a SP. We will probably need to find another SP before the deadline.
The Bullpen: I don't really need to touch this one much. It's been a rough start for this group. AA really failed us here. We're gonna need deadline help here too.
Harris' approach at the plate remains bad, and he's hitting the ball less hard than he was a year ago. He has a sub .700 OPS over the last 365 days. I'm still a believer, but he has me concerned that he mightbe another Jackie Bradley Jr. which would not be fun considering his remaining contract.
The Ugly:
Kelenic looks awful and the underlying metrics support that. 84.0 EV is down 5 MPH from last year and his career average. If he were getting unlucky with balls in play, that's one thing. But he just looks awful. But unless someone gets injured, we have to deal with him until at least August.
Arcia's numbers continue their downward trend from a year ago. If you didn't already know, he is toast as an everyday player.
Elder is not a major league pitcher. Bryan de la Cruz and Stuart Fairchild are notMLB players. Send Elder down and DFA to other 2 immediately. I mean these 2 OFers are so bad they make you miss Eddie Rosario.
