'25 QB transfer prospects (Joey Aguilar)

Chicken and egg: the offense can open up opportunities for QBs if the passing threat is there. Last year, and even the year before with Milton, defenses were able to pack the box knowing we were a run first team. Add a dynamic passing threat and all of a sudden we have light boxes, which is what Heupel really wants to face.
I agree if the QB is a willing and able runner. The passing game opening up opportunities only works if the QB is a willing and capable runner. Nothing on tape or statistically suggests that Hoover is that guy.

I find this thread incredibly ironic. Everyone hates Nico because he’s a mercenary POS that put money over team. Yet everyone here is going bonkers wanting us to go poach someone who has the exact same qualities. Make it make sense. It’s just utter nonsense. I personally don’t want another teams starter as it just feeds into the flawed system. I hope we just get a decent player to add some depth. Yes I am older and think integrity matters which is why I would be a horrible division one coach. I would love to see one of our two existing Quarterbacks take over.
you new here? There’s an entire backstory of the state of TN sticking their necks out for nico and fighting for him. Not to mention sitting for a year while collecting his money. Taking every first team rep in practice, hold out on his team for more money. Hold us hostage. Then icing on cake is have a mediocre year and ask for double. That’s why people don’t like the guy/family

Merk can make the throws. A lot of teams win NC without elite QBs. The most recent NC team included.
Experienced QB's you can win with, Merk lacks experience, sound mechanic muscle memory and has good to very good, not great arm.

a QB can win in spite of some of these, with all these combined I don't expect much beyond mediocre. Not trying to be negative but perspective is important. We should prepare for a 6-8 win season IMO.

When we took UCF’s head coach after our idiot coach got caught doing stupid stuff; were we talking integrity then? This isn’t much different. I understand what you are saying but I believe if we want to continue to move up in the ranks of college football; we need to find a better option than what we currently have on the roster. It’s not wrong to play by the rules and find a better option. We at the minimum need to find another solid qb that deserves a scholarship, since we only have 2.
Disagree. Heupel was in the offseason and had a clear contract with an exit clause. This is after spring practice and would inflict extreme pain on the team we go steal a starter from at this point and time. I just think that’s slimy. I also think it’s highly unlikely to lead to any sort of championship and sends a terrible message to the rest of the team. I agree with your last point and is why I said we should target another team’s back up. Anyway I will drop it.

It helps when the most recent national champ has the 2 best players in the country and a lot of old talented guys on the roster .

If we don't maintain momentum, keeping track for 9-10 wins I'm not sure we retain the better offensive players on this team, particularly skill positions.

I find it doubtful Merk can perform to that end...... But maybe he's a gamer and surprises me.

FWIW Josh Pate confirmed the number when it broke
I trust what Pate says for the most part. We don’t need to go get a $3.5 $4 million guy at quarterback when we have other, more urgent positions of need. Mainly at wide receiver. We definitely need some more quality depth there as well

This ain't the old college football. There's maybe 5-6 programs that can legitimately expect 10 win seasons every year with Unrestricted Free Agency for every player at all times, and we aren't one of them.

I want the best quarterback that we can win with…it’s within the rules. Go Vols!

A whole bunch of Chicken Littles in here. Nico was average. We have no idea what Merk and GMac are. Their ratings say they should at least be average. This team is going to succeed or fail as a whole and I don't think we are going to experience this vast drop off at QB play everyone thinks we will. We've had average QB play the last 2 years and have 19 wins to show. It's gonna be alright.

I am not totally disagreeing with you, but we are absolutely in the group of schools that can compete at the highest level. I am not sure we can get 10 every year, but we have the money, resources, and support to swing for that pretty much every off season.

I like to think we are a bubble team that can go either way depending on how things click in the next couple of days.

we could feasibly get there, but we aren't there now. If this era started in 2010, UGA wouldn't be one of the programs capable of it.. but they certainly are now.

That's where we want to be though, and if what you're saying is the reality, we've hit our apex and have to grind back to get there again in the next 5 years or so.

Our better pieces at skill positions will transfer out seeking money and a better roster.
Faison won't stay committed if we can't keep/attract the pieces to compete. He'll simply go elsewhere.

I would love for a baller to come out of the portal, but right now I don't give a crud who plays QB as long as they want to be here. Who thought trying to pressure a team called "the Volunteers" for extra millions would be a smart play?

That's why I don't think any program not named OSU, UGA, Oregon, etc is capable of winning 10 games every single year

I wanted to post this and find it kind of relevant to what you wrote. I think it’s a good perspective SIAP.

No. I heard about the crisis moments over the last year and was asked not to share any of it. Similarly, over the last two weeks, I was asked to not share anything. The outcome was unavoidable, largely due one unstable force not named Nico. Ultimately he got and followed terrible advice. Some of that is on him. Some players really love Nico, and are crushed. Others are relieved. We have to/will add a QB for numbers sake, but will aim for a QB who can start immediately. QBs who are not currently in the portal have reached out through agents. Many are at the experience level of our current roster. That’s not a fit. We are looking for an experienced 1, or an experienced 2 who can move to 1 if needed. We are not looking for a young guy to jump into the competition. Sorry, that’s not too helpful or specific. I think a lot will happen in the coming weeks as players decide enter the second portal window.
Here's the more detailed info you are all looking for. I'm sure AP and RC are not speculating on a starter or back channel convos to "protect" the program. I imagine they don't put out any info they're asked not to

Felt like we were on the cusp, had the pieces and recruiting jump to get is over the hump. Nico being out certainly throws a wrench in that.

There are two paths. Run it back with what you have, or attempt to upgrade the QB position and maintain your position. Keep your next QB in the fold.

Number two is still possible even if you do bring in a transfer upgrade, but you risk losing Faison and others with a step back season. It's a rough position to be in and it wouldn't surprise me if it breaks the latter way Heuple loses his job in 3 years.

This whole thing sucks.
