Several notable sources said Merk did not do well during the open spring scrimmage and was likely not even our starter right now.

Idk if any of the information is from reliable sources, but there was one poster that said he was already transferring to Tennessee, which we all know that can't officially happen until the portal opens, but I guess it's possible he could have already agreed to come here through back channels or agents. He has announced that he is transferring. Just wonder if he could be who we supposedly met with. Wouldn't object to that idea!!

He was #8 IIRC. He played in Savannah, not the biggest hotbed in GA.

No one (and probably Merk himself) expected him to play a significant role this year. Plus, he’s getting recruited over with BF.

#6 in rivals, and one of 6 quarterbacks invited to the Polynesian Bowl in HS. Not that it matters, Nico was #1 and that didn’t exactly translate. I don’t think anyone is being recruited over. You always take a qb in each class for situations like this. Merklinger was more highly touted than HB but we were clamoring for that kid. Anyways, i just think it’s way too early to count him out. Only way he gets experience is to play in the games.

If we can get him we should be happy…I think Oklahoma tried to get him to transfer in before they moved on to Mateer.

Exactly. This could be the turning point in Heupel. We are on the bubble of teams that can be great or can quickly run out of steam on the recruiting trail.

A wrong move here spells disaster.

The Hendon spring game is good memory, and we should also be careful in judging Merk from O&W game as the format wasn’t what it normally is, we don’t know script/gameplan/etc, and his whole world got flipped in 48 hours. Not saying we are rising with him, or I think he is next Manning- just would warn against snap judgement.

I’ve seen plenty of FB vols (the worst kind) crown GM as starter after his TDs

This times 100. I am not saying GM isn’t the guy but the average fan who wants him to be the guy allow that to skew their judgement.
