This is not correct. They are very strategic with their pool of money. They paid a fair price for Gillespie but they didn’t have to overpay, for reasons. Carey was a moneyball get, the market value for him was much lower than our staff’s opinion of him. And that leaves wiggle room to spend elsewhere.
At one point the staff likely thought they might be able to get a value pickup in freeman—a d2 player in harrogate, TN. But his stock blew up, so now they’ll have to pay market value. Which they still might do, he’s a good player.
Also keep in mind we don’t even have a full starting roster. At the moment it’s Gillespie and two posts (Carey and okpara maybe). We would have had to pay for wings whether they were transfers or returnees—that’s the reality—so we have budget to do that. And we will have, every year. It’s not even a question.
This is also why this staff prefers not to get into bidding wars. They want to build a whole team, and they want to sustain success into the future. If Louisville overpays for mcneely, we move on. We trust our staff to find court value that matches or exceeds the dollar value, and we aren’t interested in torpedoing the front court (say) to overpay for one shooting guard.
And because of the savings, we are able to do things like make a competitive offer to ament.
Or to fill the wing and backup wing spots if ament turns us down.
We are not going to flashy-bid, but we will definitely compete.
