Recruiting Football Talk VIII

I always thought Nico was going to be a late developer but would have a solid year this season, go to the NFL, and then finally start to put it altogether a few years into being a pro. He's honestly been overhyped because of his potential. The decent defenses on the schedule last season showed that he still had a ways to go from a mental standpoint. To his credit, some things started to click towards the end of last season and I think he'll have a good year wherever he ends up. By all reports, Merk has been good this spring and I'm excited to see him. We'll be in a similar situation as last season with a redshirt freshman starting QB and crossing our fingers he doesn't get hurt. I'm more concerned about Matthews, Staley, Boo, and others deciding to leave now because of the optics of losing Nico. Also a little concerned about the optics of this situation and how it could impact recruiting...mainly hanging onto Faizon. Nico showing a lot of progress and proving the offense was still viable would've gone a long way towards solidifying him. With Merk being a redshirt freshman, it's almost expected that there will be some struggles. If he happens to play well, then how can you sell Faizon on having the same opportunity he expected? Always drama for us Vol fans.
Maybe I’m in the minority here, but I don’t think it hurts us too badly in terms of recruiting. Everyone sees this as Nico wanting more money and us saying “you haven’t proved that yet.” I think that is more impressive and shows we don’t just hand out the money for nothing. I don’t think it’ll be read as Nico bailing because the roster and/or coaches are crap.

My guess is his agent/handler was trying to get more money and Tennessee was like nah F that and leaked this to show the university doesn’t care if he leaves. Also explain reporters of Merk pushing for the job

I’ve missed those reports about Merk pushing for the job. Can you point me to them?

Opposing coaches will spin anything to negative recruit. They'll use this somehow.

I have a lot of confidence in merk and gmac, BUT what I am concerned with is the wr’s. Stayley and matthews were convinced to stay knowing that nico would be their qb. With him leaving, will they go too?

Ive read the last practice was that Nico was on target while others didnt have a great day.

Im not ready to buy Merk stock yet. He will be good though, one day/
Yall would can me fast if I was Coach. . . i'd fire Nico to mars and start a walk-on from tusculum before I put up with this crap.

I’m thinking it will galvanize the team and they will have more respect for the coaches and administration.

Really thought we were moving past the drama.

Why can’t we have nice things? Shouldn’t be this hard to get over the good to great hump with 2 10-win regular seasons in the past 3 years after everything we’ve been though.

Best outcome is it’s handled quickly behind closed doors, everyone’s happy, they convince media and fanbase and team this was all about nothing, and we get back to business as soon as possible. Nico is our best bet this year to keep building momentum in the program.

Its like my knee jerk recruiting reactions. Its easy to say this that and tother. But in reality truth is usually somewhere in the middle.

Fortunately there is no one better in this world equipped to make a decision than Josh Huepel.

Question to ponder on. Ohio State has made a run at Nico also. After scouting him, playing against him and shutting him down. What would they see in him that would make them think he can lead them to another NC? Do they see him currently playing in a flawed offense?

Nico only had 9 TD passes all year against SEC competition.

Offensive line was doodoo.....lol...yeah it's not like Sampson had the most rush yards ever in a season last year in Tennessee history.

For those curious, Joe Milton had 12 TDs against SEC competition the year before we finished with 1 less win.

The people saying the OL was doo doo are the same individuals that think when a QB isn’t a passing threat that defenses don’t start blitzing like crazy which is what they did and why Nico was to blame. Defenses had no fear of his ability to throw the ball down field and that was what made our OL not look good sometimes on passing plays.

He would almost never check down to the wide open short throw.
