Recruiting Football Talk VIII

now that it went this direction, Nico's dad is going to try to slander the program, coaches, fans on the way out, and our 247/on3 guys will directly or indirectly (via national writers) release the ugly behind-the-scenes stuff

his dad really doesn't get it

I suspect that Mr. Iamaleava takes us, the fan base, and the university for hillbilly rubes who can easily be snookered.
He's a problem parent who could end up ruining his son's life.

At least we will finally have more money.

I’m gonna go ahead and blame our meh portal haul on these negotiations.
Two lessons Heup has to learn from this:

1. You can’t worry about hurt feelings and whatnot in the portal era. Kids will leave anyway.

2. If you got talented freshmen, you better get them ready and play ‘em while you got ‘em. Because here today; gone tomorrow.

I always thought Nico was going to be a late developer but would have a solid year this season, go to the NFL, and then finally start to put it altogether a few years into being a pro. He's honestly been overhyped because of his potential. The decent defenses on the schedule last season showed that he still had a ways to go from a mental standpoint. To his credit, some things started to click towards the end of last season and I think he'll have a good year wherever he ends up. By all reports, Merk has been good this spring and I'm excited to see him. We'll be in a similar situation as last season with a redshirt freshman starting QB and crossing our fingers he doesn't get hurt. I'm more concerned about Matthews, Staley, Boo, and others deciding to leave now because of the optics of losing Nico. Also a little concerned about the optics of this situation and how it could impact recruiting...mainly hanging onto Faizon. Nico showing a lot of progress and proving the offense was still viable would've gone a long way towards solidifying him. With Merk being a redshirt freshman, it's almost expected that there will be some struggles. If he happens to play well, then how can you sell Faizon on having the same opportunity he expected? Always drama for us Vol fans.

End any talks, roll with merk. I'm tired of 20 year olds making millions then making the university a laughing stock hours before what's supposed to be a celebration of the program in a spring game.
would love to have nico. preferably this happens next off season. but it didn't.

try to keep him but we aren't desperate.

regardless of the rumor, he has SEC experience.

I hope they keep him. No player on this roster is worth $4M, not even $3. He's worth chasing, but, not any more than just going through the motions.

We have a team to get ready for Summer.

Excited to see what Merk can do.

My guess is his agent/handler was trying to get more money and Tennessee was like nah F that and leaked this to show the university doesn’t care if he leaves. Also explain reporters of Merk pushing for the job
My guess is Tennessee wants its $2M QB to be at practice. That's about that.

seems that way

they made it a point to do some heavy complimenting

apparently there was also some "meh" language around Nico when 247 and On3 were putting their top QBs lists together

thinking local media felt something was awry
Well let’s hope the reports are true. Been saying for a while Merk’s HS tape looks a lot like Hendon’s. Let’s hope he’s the second coming

Nico is due for a big step forward this year. No guarantees but usually second-year starters play much better. Game slows down for them big time. Hope he stays and this gets worked out.

Disagree brother the messages coming out are direct but nuanced communications from your program. If what nico was asking for was justified none of us would he knowing or discussing. It is not and that is fact. Nico's crew jumped the shark.
Agree, the information they are reporting on was given them to them by the programs leadership. My guess is Nico communicated to them he wouldn't be preparing for the OW game and this was the last straw/writing on the wall for our programs administration.

They got out in front of it and took away Nico and handlers ability to leverage Tennessee in a bidding war.

Nico only had 9 TD passes all year against SEC competition.
Offensive line was doo doo. WRs were always injured. Heup and crew are as much to blame for that as Nico.
Offensive line was doodoo.....lol...yeah it's not like Sampson had the most rush yards ever in a season last year in Tennessee history.

Was Merk really pushing him in spring? I’ve read 0 spring reports.
Some of the later reports would start off for the qb section of their write ups with Merk was on fire before even talking about Nico. Take that as you will but I thought it was weird at the time that back to back reports were like that.
