Tennessee & Nico Iamaleava are in active contract negotiations ahead of the 2025 season

What do Vol fans think? Do we agree with Will West that there is no coming back from this now? Is Nico leaving a foregone conclusion?

I have no reason to doubt him, and I'm guessing he's hearing what everyone else is, but just isn't "filtering it" as much. It could be we are running a smear campaign against Nico to get him to leave, making him out to be the bad guy.

Yes I read the book about him. A lot of people suspected him. I am in agreement with others that there is a mole inside the AD and I'd bet DW knows about it and calls the shots.
Yeah, for Sparks Low and AP to be spilling stuff after Nico’s dad’s Tweet last night, it’s clear someone is leaking to them. It’s clear they are tired of his handlers.

how did the school nuke the kid? I am confused. Is there any indication that Spyre or Tennessee shorted him?

He’s saying that Tennessee is “nuking” Nico’s public perception by releasing behind closed doors contract negotiation details. Will says that’s not fair to Nico, I say tough ****, leak it. So I disagree with him. How is it fair for the player to hold all of the cards and tarnish the perception of the university in public but the university isn’t allowed to do the same to defend itself? Tennessee has done nothing wrong here.

Crazy but yes he was disappointing last year considering the hype, whether that is fair or not, it is true.

There were 6 qbs SEC better than Nico last year.

Unless he makes a magical jump, he will disappoint again this year.
So interesting that in his first real year of competition, he had very favorable numbers to Peyton Manning. I wasn't disappointed by him at all. Beat two of three rivals in his first season. Had one bad loss in Arky.

Every HS kid is a dice roll. You've obviously got a boner for Nico and that's your axe to grind, not mine. He isn't the second coming of Hooker or Peyton, no question, but you have a locker room full of guys who have been practicing thinking Nico is our guy.

It's fine if you want to bash him for his failures but he was the expected QB1 this year by a lot of fans and players. Just letting him go has ripples.
After today, half the team probably ready for him to move on.

I think less but the portal in the Spring than next Fall because a lot of the guys would like to play in the SEC. Nico can go to the B1G pretty easily but not all players have as many options.

A bigger issue is Brandon Faizon saying: Hmm, they'll just let you walk instead of working with you. Lemme ring my agent......
Or maybe he says, Nico already tried to dip a few months early and he didn't actually ball out like I am. Our record was more due to the D and Sampson. Anybody watching saw that.
TN paid Matthews and Gibson so it's not like they aren't willing to pay but at some point you cut bait.

Practice all the way to the end of spring and then pull this BS!!! I’m done !!! NIL IS RIDICULOUS , just like the PORTAL !! I’m over it

Right now, Tennessee has 3 qb's on the roster, Nico, Merklinger , and MacIntyre, a true freshman. If Nico were to leave, do we go into the season with only 2 qb's , or try to find another one in the portal? In that situation, a transfer wouldn't have any experience in Heupel's offense. Seems like that would be a recipe for disaster.
Wasn't the kid at Florida a true freshman? At this point, it might be best for all parties for Nico to go find his greener pasture.

Not surprised, but he can go try himself out at a different pasture to see what that green grass is like....How. many QBs have transferred away from us actually become something big at their new school?

Take that money and go shopping in the portal for missing pieces to support a new QB and enhance the defense. Move forward with that...several teams have shown that you do not need a rock star at QB to win big games...just need the other pieces as well to be top notch.

I'm not crying over him heading out....I AM crying at what CFB has become and will continue to be until a fair equilibrium is found. Need some type of contract to give schools some ability to plan for the future year(s) without having 100% free agency going on twice a year.

Invest the whole Spring in Nico as QB1 only to decide now to let him go?

On another front, I wonder if seeing the Pistol formation appear in practice was Heupel looking at Merk and G-Mac and planning ahead a little?

If Nico did not show up for practice, he is toast. It won't matter if somebody is running a "smear campaign."

I think he "nuked" himself. I wouldn't blame TN at all. Bring it all into the sunlight.

Renegotiates every few months.. we reserve the right to boo players that are only in it for the money. Better live up to the paycheck or it will be brutal!! And I hope no one comes in here and says he is a kid.. he’s making grown man decisions, he deserves grown man consequences!
And grown men reserve the right to boo football players.

Lol. Boo all you want, in my opinion it's immature and stupid no matter the reason.

This was planned and timed by Nico's side....we could have had all spring to start working a new QB1, instead, he takes the QB1 snaps all spring, then pulls this crap at the end thinking it now gives him leverage and has us backed in a corner.

Well, he now only has a fall preseason to prepare at another school now and learn their players, their playbooks, etc and for sure will be very different than ours.

Then let there be ripples. You don’t let some mediocre, overpaid players shake you down for even more money because other players on the team thought he would start. Players in pro sports get traded, cut, etc all the time. Doesn’t mean you decide to pay the 25th best QB in the NFL like he is top 5 because he practiced through the spring.
