OldTimer’s Dugout - Off Topic Thread

All I know is I would much rather be a Zakai or Mashack and be revered for being a player that left every game with everything I had all out on the floor while also being a part of multiple winning teams. Fans remember those types of players fondly regardless of how much money they make. Nico is headed down a treacherous path if he fails. QBs are held to a different standard whether he likes it or not. People won’t remember him in the best light all because of money.

Too close to ground zero when Pandora’s Box 🗃️ was opened. Almost feel sorry for the young man. Praying that the Lord’s Hand guides this through for him.

I don’t feel sorry for him. He has another $4M guaranteed coming to him. He is setup for generational wealth even if he never plays a down in the NFL.

I wasn’t referring to yall in the dugout, I posted that after reading the FF 🤣🤣🤣😬
Those f'n idiots over there. They will have people booing our QB at the Orange and White game if they can. Which explains, of course, the purpose and timing of the clickbait On3 article. It's all innuendo and conjecture and engagement farming. Exasperating.

On3 stirring ****…

I don’t think they are stirring anything. The only thing that may have been clickbait was the “we don’t know if he is entering the portal or not.” It was well known that Nico was flirting with entering the portal after the season and his camp had contact with other programs. That’s the only reason Mike Matthews planned to enter the portal, he didn’t know what Nico was going to do. I think this is a case of they wanted a raise to current market value and whenever the fanbase caught wind of it they saw the backlash and decided to reverse course and try to get the new deal done privately. The only problem is this fanbase ends up finding out about the majority of things sooner or later.

We only know this because of a low brow CA attorney who leaked the details to The Athletic in the hopes to obtain more college clients. Lots of SEC QBs are making this or much more but it’s never made public. That CA attorney shouldn’t be allowed to represent any athlete for NIL purposes. With that said, athletes should honor their NIL contracts and not renegotiate in public; however it’s the Wild, Wild West.

Who could have guessed? Nico's father:

Where there is smoke there is fire. Of course his dad is going to go on the defensive. He doesn’t want this to get any worse than it already is. Nico is the one that needs to be talking for himself instead of his family. Time to grow up.

It’s not that he sucks but more so that he played like an average starting SEC QB last year, yet is asking for more money after his lone season. Sampson and that defense carried the team and the optics of this situation indicates he thinks he was the straw that stirred the drink. I would rather us take QBs closer to Hooker’s and Dobbs’ profile and not deal with a 5 star that acts like Aaron Rodgers, thinking they are more than they are worth. I guess he forgets he got paid $2M for his freshman year to ride the bench the entire regular season so he could learn how to run out of bounds as the game clock expires vs an average at best Arkansas team.
Did he really get paid $2M? How was his NIL deal was with Spyre structured? I know it was estimated to be worth about $8M but UTK isn't covering any of that. Nico has a deal with Dre's Beats and a card deal and done some events, not sure what else he has but that may not add up to $2M. Spyre is getting 10% maybe his problem is how he's being marketed. Who knows.

I am all for NIL, get an agent, make a deal, get marketed...sounds simple. Schools need to step back.

@preacherman20 Can you add to how NIL contract work?

It’s actually been reported he got closer to $2.5M. The Athletic is the one that named Nico as the $8M man a couple years ago whenever it publicized. His current valuation on On3.com is listed at $3.1M. It doesn’t take a genius to see what is going on. He sees these other QBs getting paid ridiculous amounts of money and that in turn resets the market just like professional sports. How often do we look at NFL QB contracts and say “wow, they shouldn’t be getting paid like a top 5 player” but they feed us this crap that is just what the market is now? I don’t care what the market is, I saw how this fool played and it was average at best and he doesn’t deserve a raise.
