The Official “Regular Posters of the Basketball Forum” Thread

So a week later, I now feel really good about the year we had. I mean I already did but after letting the emotion of the EE loss fade it's incredible that we're to the point where making 2 straight EEs is great but we want more and it's not crazy to expect it.

I still don't know if I'll ever witness one and I'll believe it when I see it, but if you're not feeling good being a UT basketball fan then you never will.

Like your logic, many EXPECT fans that expect championships to provide receipts showing six figure donations to SPYRE. Seems fair.

We finish 5th in the final AP poll for the second straight year

Is that yet another first in program history?

Fahr Barnes! He’s just taking a salary as he’s checking out into retirement. He’d rather be coaching UCLA, too.

Does it feel crazy to anyone else that Jordan Gainey only shot 30% from 3 this year? It feels like it was so much better than that.

I guess the feeling just comes from how clutch he was, and the fact he shot 50% from 2 (which is pretty great for a guard)
25% in conference play, and even the last 10 games was like 25% from deep, so not like it’s recency bias…just hit some really big shots and was really good in 2nd halves it felt like in big games. It was his 2pt shooting and driving that really blew up though, 57% from 2 over his last 10 games at like 6 attempts from 2 a game, which is really good for a guard. Shot 52 free throws in that span as well and hit like 85%, he really started driving to the rim and getting to the line which is what helped rise our offensive efficiency late in the year.

Alan Huss leaving High Point as probably the hottest MM name going into next year to go and be head coach in waiting at Creighton, where he was played and was an assistant for a long time. I’m sure he views it as his dream job, pretty unprecedented move though, bigger point being that was a guy I think would have been atop White’s list for potential replacement to Barnes.

It seemed like he shot that or worse from three, he was much better going to the basket, and 50 percent is fantastic considering how many 14-16 footers he put up.

Yea, that is a odd decision. However, Creighton is a decent enough job plus like you said, he played there. It's really weird as Greg McDermott is still relatively young (60).

Guessing he talked with him and has a pretty good idea he’ll be hanging it up in the next year or 2

Maybe because his mid-range was stone cold. He was elite.

He was good all year but it wasn't three point shooting. Felt like he shot 10% to me. He started focusing on what he was actually good at and hit a the next level by seasons end.

He also made a conservative effort to drive and draw about halfway through this year. That being an emphasis after taking the drives when they come can also mess with a shot. Imo
Him driving the ball when Igor and others wouldn’t is what won me over. He seemed to be more aggressive with seeking his shot, and had a mid range shot.

It seemed like every 3 Gainey hit was a big one which is why his % seems so low. Gainey became the primary go-to guy in money situations down the stretch of the season, and established himself as the late shot clock iso option. I mean, how many fouls did he draw with less than 2-3 seconds on the shot clock? Kid was absolutely fearless going to the rim against bigger players, and was masterful at creating space for that mid range jumper.

Little surprise that Barnes always had Jordan on the floor in end of game sequences while he would go offense-defense with Chaz and Shack. Really wish he had one more year here.

I rewatched the Kentucky Sweet 16 win last night, as that is how I'll remember this year's Vols. Just a dominant, thorough ass kicking, probably the best 40 minute effort this team delivered all season. I loved the contribution of D-Stone, with the 3, the huge block, and ball handling to help beat the press late. It's a shame he got off to a rocky start here with the personal issues, as he could have been a much bigger factor.

Now McDermott is atop the list

I followed his stats closely and it drove me crazy...still surprised we were able to win so many games with him struggling from 3 so much. Having said that, his midrange game became lethal and helped offset the poor 3 pt shooting as you pointed out.

I wonder if his % was better in the 2nd half of the games? Seems like he heated up in several games in the 2nd.

Nico was the Igor of football.
I’m in full bring on the MerkSlinger mode. All for players getting theirs, but the grass isn’t always greener, even if there’s a little more of it. And I’m ready to let him find out until he shows the proper love to the squad that showed him the most first again. GB🍊
