Trade Wars and Tariffs

Actually it’s a fact RE Boolean Logic. Double negation just gets us back to the starting state of the variable.

Look I was done with this stupidity of a method when I went to the USTR web site and digested their published methodology. I don’t even need my BS in engineering to understand the math high school algebra was more than enough. Along with high school English. The process never addresses any actual tariff and the Trump admin is gaslighting people thinking they are too stupid to not actually understand their own published information.
OK

I agree the calculations were stupid. At the end of the day, I just don't give a damn. He could just about have used the Powerball Lottery drum to pull tariff rates at random for countries as far as I'm concerned. The point was to force all countries to negotiate tariffs. Any method of assigning the actual figures would work as long as they were high enough. I don't think they should have explained the methodology of calculation at all.

Our tariff scheme with the EU is effectively balanced. Zero-for-zero would be great, but it's simply trading one balanced scheme for another. It also does nothing to address the trade imbalance, which Trump swears is the reason to do all of this.

But there is no logic to this. We already have zero-for-zero from Australia and a trade surplus in our favor. But we dropped a 10% tariff on the Aussies. If zero-for-zero and/or a trade surplus is the goal, how is Australia supposed to negotiate their way out of the new tariff?
US beef seems to be the issue with Australia...

If, at any point, Congress is serious about stopping Trump's tariffs, they can propose and pass a bill that is written sufficient to garner the support of the necessary majority of the legislature and stop the tariffs.

They won't, however, because most of them are not interested in helping the American people; they are interested in re-election/re-enrichment, so they don't want to actually vote for anything that could pass, they want to vote for whatever gets the headlines for their base.

Then the admin should be truthful in their communications of their methods and stop gas lighting us because that actually hurts support for this debacle from people actually dissecting the methods

Once again, at the end of the day, I don't care. If his policies end up being positive for the US economy, then Americans will support him.

I've mentioned before that during Trump's first administration, I quit listening to his speeches. I think he is a horrible communicator. The effects of a number of his policies that are great for the country end up being partially offset by other policies that mitigate some of the positive impacts. However, at the end of the day, his policies are net very positive for the U.S.

We are living thru an epic temper tantrum that is costing the world trillions in lost valuations. That’s all this is.

A lot of what he did in his first hundred days is positive and I agree with. This tariff/trade war stupidity is on par with the stupidest presidential decisions of the last 100 years.
It’s moronic. And seeing the MAGA crowd eat it up and brush any criticism of it off as “TDS” or whatever nonsense is pathetic, but hardly surprising.

It's not the normal response I’m hearing from people in the real world though. Even some of the most conservative people I know are concerned about what these tariffs will do to their finances. These are people who’ve supported literally everything else Trump has done. I know the people on this forum would just say they’re being paid by Soros to think that way or something, but it’s a reminder that this place lives in a huge bubble.

These tariffs are unpopular. No Breitbart poll will change that fact. Sorry to break it to you guys.

Cool, you enjoy being taken advantage of. Noted.

What method do you think would be better to bring critical supply chains to the US and therefore under our control? Do you want to be dependent on China to deliver us antibiotics and components to make our weapons function?
I think India makes most of our meds. We shouldn't, by law, be using Chinese anything for weapons. Hell in thr FAA we couldn't use Chinese made stainless steel washers in our radars because they were so low quality. I dont think (don't know) many of their products make it into our weapon systems.

Their products (rare earth metals) make it into almost every high tech device. China dominates the world's market for rare earth metals. That is the biggest achilles heel for the US.

Regardless of the outcome, and I want to be hopeful for a positive result I just don’t see it happening, this action is going to go down as one of the most idiotic actions of a US president in the last 100 years I think.

Actually, this is a great time to pick up some real bargains on the market . Once the dust settles and the tariffs get renegotiated, the market will skyrocket

Do you REALLY -- I mean TRULY -- believe that Trump would not tariff our staunchest enemies, for any reason? He bashes them left and right. He's antagonistic towards our allies about tariffs. It makes no sense that he'd NOT tariff our enemies.
Because he's actively sanctioning the crap out of them and needs room for negotiations on other shat. You are so dense sometimes. Why would he spare Iran? Hell you thought he was going to start WWIII with them.
