How does this square with NATO? Greenland is a member of NATO by virtue of its being a Danish territory. The US attacks Greenland and Denmark invokes Article 5 of NATO.

Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty (NATO's founding treaty) states that an attack against one NATO member is considered an attack against all, obligating members to assist the attacked ally, potentially including the use of armed forces. And we, of course, are a member of NATO.
