Trade Wars and Tariffs

Low skill manufacturing is abroad now because it is a good thing for us. There's no reason to pay a premium to do it at home when we can outsource it to a cheaper labor pool.

It's foolish to bring that low-skill manufacturing back to the US so the unskilled here have something to do. Rather, they should get skilled at something useful.

Jobs like building manufacturing facilities that automate low skill tasks? Why do that when dangerous, low paying jobs can be moved to SE Asia and get around those pesky OSHA rules and environmental regulations?

You don't think there will always be a need for unskilled (low skilled) labor?
There will be a lot less of a need for it. I've been in warehousing for 25yrs and have seen the changes. For almost 20 of that my job has been to reduce the ability of low skilled humans to make mistakes. Robots and automation are going to take a while lot of jobs unless they are artificially filled. Can't imagine many industries will be immune

If unskilled labor is not needed, where will an unskilled laborer learn skills?

Honestly, way too many just aren't suited to learn a whole lot of skills and others stinky don't want to. There will be a need very soon to figure out what to do with them.

How many people can 43 pounds kill though?

A lot of this is about Canada cozying up with China recently. Can't open call this a trade war..... But that's what this is. I assume Trump is only seeking more concessions from Canada and reassurances......... Not a fan of the means but I'm sure much quieter dialogue has been discussed in the past.

Trump's an idiot, what can I say. But he's not completely wrong here either.
I love how anonymous keyboard warriors proclaim a man worth a billion dollars is an idiot.

Enjoy paying 3x what you currently pay for your goods when you everything you buy gets made by people on an American pay scale.

I for one have no interest in bringing back low-skill manufacturing to the US in the name of isolationism. But if you want your cheap trinkets Made in America be ready to pay handsomely for it.
So you hate American workers. Got it.

It will be. Someone has to setup and maintain robots and automated systems. I wouldn’t exactly call that low skill but it is something that will always be needed. It doesn’t hurt to keep people in case you have to resort to something manual in order to keep things going. Even the most automated operations still need a lot of hands on people.

Even if we wanted to we don't have the bodies to bring those jobs back. The baby boomer retirement and a declining birth rate has left us with a huge void. It's likely a good thing we shipped off all those low skilled jobs years ago

The chaff of society will be a problem in your scenario.
I think there are jobs robots will never do which will be filled by unskilled labor which learns skills over time. Construction, for example.

It isn't just low skill labor. Automotive, Computer, etc. China is replicating and producing everything. This is sinking Europe. We are only staying a float because tariffs are forcing companies to build here. I am seeing this at my job.

People, even smart ones, buy into media hype too much. AI still has a long way to go.

Never let a crisis go to waste..

Seems Smith has become the frontleader to replace Trudeau as PM. Poilievre was basically a shoe in before these tarrifs. Ironically, Canada will be wrecked even further.

That was my thought as well.

Little sissy couldn't take Trump any longer & got the hell out of Dodge.
Canadians wanted him gone for quite some time now & the dictator steps down.
