Recruiting Football Talk VIII

With respect to Gibson, figure out what exactly is going on. If he's trying to leverage pay...

Suspend him from the team. Make it public and set a standard. Call it a violation of team rules and being a bad teammate... if you're legally able to, suspend payments. Treat it like any other team violation. Tell him he will have to work his way back, and make it hell for him.

You have to draw a line in the sand. "We as a coaching staff -" are your biggest fans. We fight for you guys every day from the field to the bank. But if we've negotiated a contract and payments, that's it. Don't get greedy. We expect you to keep your word and you expect us to keep ours. Your time to negotiate ended when you signed your name.

If he doesn't get right, boot his a$$ NOW. No sense in paying a kid to waste a roster spot and resources and paying him to go to classes. Make him pay the rest of his semester out of pocket (if it hasn't already been paid).

Perhaps there is another CB out there that will see opportunity to get in DB rotation on an SEC defense. Not just that, but an SEC defense with a good DL and a capable offense. There's a lot to sell if someone wants to come

I don't know they'll be BETTER that Gibson, but perhaps we can bolster the group going into fall camp at least

I've see the Vols do well under this staff with a great offense and average-to-bad DB play. I'm more worried about depth and starting walk-ons by November than anything else.

Roster management is hard, as evidenced by the WR and DB rooms. But you can't negotiate with terrorists. Gotta let someone go when they burn VFL to turn VFP (Vol for Paycheck).
A really good DL can make dbs look a lot better. Makes me wonder how good Gibson really is anyway. What if he's just an ok db, made look a lot better by a good DL? If that's the case, then it shouldn't be extremely hard to find a decent cb who can get good results with help from the rest of the team. May already have one on the roster.

Based on fan reaction, this is backfiring for ole Ricky & his "team". . .

I remember when Haynesworth and VandenBosch were wrecking the other teams OL it made the Titan’s very average secondary look fantastic. 3 of the 4 starters made the pro bowl. After he left they went back to being pedestrian

As a older individual I think what Gibson is doing is shady but if I was playing ball in this era in college I probably would do the same thing. Gibson isn't breaking the rules because there are no rules, it's just a overall bad look on his rep.

With the 'eye test', Gibson looked athletic and fast. I'd really like to have him back. But yes, he already had a deal and now is backing out? I trust in the staff to work these things out.

As far as Gibson goes, I don't know the specifics of the situation but talent does not trump character. As a coach I have cut loose several very good athletes who were bad characters and everytime the team was better for it. A lot of times coaches (and fans) are the dude who chases the girl that turns heads only to regret it later when they find out the cost far outweighed the benefit.
ZZ is perfect example, he is not a head turner as far as athletic ability or tools but he takes care of business and is a force multiplier for his team. Character and drive are the "it" factor.

But it seems really easy to make legally binding rules by literally 1) writing it into the contract and/or 2) having it be a part of the team rules.

When its a part of team rules then its not just enforced by coaches it's also enforced by teammates.

At this point in time that would be illegal. They are getting “NIL” money, wink wink, so it can’t be tied to being on the team

He's at 829

Rick Pitino has 755 instead of 878 because 4 seasons got vacated
John Calipari has 829 instead of 871 because 42 wins of his were vacated
Bill Self has 814 instead of 829 because 15 of wins of his were vacated
That's because Self, Calipari, and Pitino are huge cheaters and crooks. 😆

Self in particular pisses me off. Didn't the NCAA stall and stall and stall for a guy who had an illegal shoe company scheme and paying his players, and the evidence was air tight. If the crooked NCAA had slammed Self immediately and thoroughly, since they had the evidence, his recruiting would have taken a nosedive and Self wouldn't have that compromised title. It was another Harbaugh-type NCAA op with the same result.

As for the other two, f them, too.

Also, we still haven't heard about what was on those Michigan computers that had the Fbee involved. NCAA stalled and stalled, then swept that under the rug, with media participation. Saban very strongly implied that Harbaugh had hacked rivals' computers and had stolen (across state lines) practice video, playbooks, signals, schemes, everything. The media was peculiarly uncurious in that story.

I get that aspect of it, but how is it different from calling it an "off field distraction" or "behavior detrimental to the team" etc. There's all kinds of team rules for behavior outside the team. What he's doing may be legal, but a violation of team rules is a violation of team rules.

I guess the kicker is getting the team to agree to those rules.

PSA for the VN RF Regulars:

To be absolutely clear, I'M GOOD. It's just that my eyes have been bothering me for a little while. Switching to dark mode helped but my eyes have started getting "tired" more often, especially the past 3 or 4 months. It's really noticeable if I look at my phone more than 2 hours a day, so I'm "budgeting". It's nothing to be concerned about my BIG ORANGE friends, I'm just trying to cut down on my screen time.
