2025 Target List

Likely a substantial buyout involved with a first year coach?
I don’t think he’s their top choice. Many of the boosters are traumatized by the ghost of Shaka. They’ll probably run that to ground first. Important to note that Bennett remains royalty, and Sanchez is his guy. They don’t have to keep Sanchez. They do have to tread lightly, especially since his team is outperforming talent lately.

Yeah that's a win all around. As a VCU graduate, it's always hard to see their coaches get poached for bigger jobs. Been happening for over two decades and somehow they always hit on the next coach.
I also have a degree from VCU. It's astonishing how successful that department has been in hiring basketball coaches. Not all of them succeed after VCU, but the hit rate for success at VCU is crazy high.

There are a few mid-majors that seem to follow that same pattern.

Tulsa did it for a while, as well. Nolan Richardson, Tubby Smith, Bill Self, Buzz Peterson all parlayed success at Tulsa to high-major jobs. Obviously, Buzz was the outlier who flopped, but he left a nice cupboard of talent for his successor at Tennessee, Bruce Pearl.

Xavier has had Thad Matta, Skip Prosser, Sean Miller, and Chris Mack. Xavier is arguably not a mid-major, but they've been a stepping stone to bigger jobs for each of those coaches.

Butler has had Brad Stevens, Chris Holtmann, Todd Lickliter, and Thad Matta.

Probably a self perpetuating cycle at some point. Attractive candidates begin to see those jobs as great places to advance themselves, so the schools have better options than other, seemingly similarly situated schools (say that five times fast)

What is our situation in the backcourt? Are we in on any PG's/CG's? Because the cupboard is gonna be bare. We only return one guard, Bishop, who cant currently buy minutes it seems. We have a Center and a wing signed. Are we looking to the portal for guards? I feel like we need to find a couple 4 year PG/CG guys to develop because I really can't imagine a Barmes system working with a transfer PG. Not saying its impossible we just never have seen it. This question is directed at guys like @cncchris33 and @bleedingTNorange that seem to be in there on the pulse

Brayden Burries, Chance Mallory & Zyree Collins are 3 HS names

Feels like this recent trend of just making the anointed successor and/or interim coach the full time coach has proven to be largely ineffective yet it keeps happening. With the exception of Jon Scheyer finding success at a place with immense resources like Duke, there are so many other examples of this going poorly.

I mean Rodney Terry has been pretty mediocre. Kyle Neptune has been not great. Hubert Davis has been pretty bad. Sanchez at UVA has been pretty bad and yet they still want to give him the full time job. I just don’t get it. Sometimes it’s okay to look outside the program/family for your next coach even if it hurts feelings.

Perhaps rather than giving a big check to lure somebody, schools figure it’s more cost efficient to save on a coach and put that extra $ towards NIL

If that’s the case, I think a lot of schools are going to learn the hard way it doesn’t matter how much talent you have if your coach is a bargain bin purchase. Tre Johnson isn’t saving Rodney Terry’s job and Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey are two lottery picks on an exceedingly mediocre team.

I agree w you, I don’t think it’s a good approach

In the case of UVA, I don’t think any coach was going to spin that roster into gold. Bennett remains highly influential, and he’s advocating for Sanchez. There are some key boosters who will go to the mat for Smart, but I’m not sure he wants to live with the constraints of coaching there. It’s not the easiest place to succeed in an NIL world.

If we don't get the 5th year rule I'd like to see the Vols grab Budd Clark, Elyjiah Freeman, and Brayden Burries. And unless we expect Cade to start at the 4 next year we are going to need a power forward transfer
