On October 13th, 2018, Tennessee went to Auburn and beat them 30-24. The Vols’ offense entered the game ranked No. 94 nationally in third-down conversions, but Guarantano dissected the Tigers’ secondary on those downs with 11-of-14 passing for 188 yards and a score. The Vols converted 10 of 19 tries on third down.

During his time at Tennessee, he racked up 1,238 passing yards, five passing touchdowns, 187 rushing yards, and five rushing touchdowns. Jim McDonald took over as Tennessee's head coach in 1963, the first year that Hal Wantland was on the Vols' varsity squad as a sophomore. Wantland carried the ball 51 times for 183 yards and four touchdowns while passing for another four scores that season.
