Game Thread: Lady Vols Vs UCONN. ; Thurs Feb 6th ; Home game; 6:30 PM Eastern; ESPN...WIN 80-76

Jill has impressed me so much as the season has gone on. Her numbers aren’t flashy but she gets in there and makes a positive impact. Her play in the first quarter allowed Coop a slow start.

Only had 4 boards but they were all offensive. That’s all hustle and exactly what you need from a big off the bench.
Holinshed has improved with her hustle and game play. She is a much better defender than she has been with the Lady Vols. She never gives up and keeps her head in the game.

Sam Spencer was our Lady Vol version of Zakai Zeigler last night. She played with such intensity, penetrated, drew the defenders, and kicked it out on offense. Moved down the court with great speed and control with several of UCONN’s players always trailing, constantly pushing tempo on offense. Didn’t get into foul trouble this game. She was the glue.

That is the best ball movement I’ve seen all year. Our offense wasn’t the typical one-on-one we have been playing lately. I can’t wait to go back and watch this game again!

I would love to see her continue this type of play the rest of the season. Sure wish we had her another year. Go Lady Vols! Such a great TEAM effort!!

Spencer and Spearman were exceptional in my view in that game. Big time performances.

Congratulations to the LVs for a great win. It was just a matter of time, and I think this is what the series needed to keep the interest going, and it is the first time in a while that the talent on the floor was very close to being even. I thought both teams played ok, each making great plays offensively and defensively. I had predicted at the Boneyard that we would win 92-83. I thought the pace of the game was fast enough to reach that score, but neither team could make a 3 point shot to save their lives, even when it was not contested. Of course, I am disappointed in some of the players that we depend on to carry us, so that will bother me for a while. My wife left the room when she got tired of me yelling at the TV over the multitude of missed lay-ups. Another lesson learned, have to move forward. The fouls on Paige and Azzi didn't help their aggressiveness on defense, but overall I thought the officials called a fair game. Can't complain, the LVols just played harder and deserved to win. So, how about playing like that on Monday, maybe you can keep it going. Good job.

Why do we all yell at the tv?!? Makes no difference in the outcome and terrorizes the dog.

The upgrade in PG play under CKC is one of the biggest storylines of the season for me.

No PG has looked this good since Bobbitt. And she had a generational talent to pass the ball. Spencer does not. In one season, she’s easily a top five LV PG.
💯

I’ll go one more and say that, last night, she was better even than Bobbitt. The way she ran that game was, as I have said before, a pro quality job.

Did anyone else appreciate that play she made when Arnold was just about to swoop in to intercept a pass intended for Spencer, but Spencer was so focused that she thought to quickly punch the ball over toward Ruby, keeping Arnold from grabbing it? That was pro smarts and focus. She knew she was no longer going to be able to catch it, but she was lightning fast in making the decision to punch it away from Arnold.

It was the headiest play of the game IMO.

I remember how they played last year, and everyone pretty much stood around and waited for Rickea to make a basket. They are in so much better shape. They actually look like a men's team the way they move around and pass the ball. It's very i fun to watch. Even Geno made comment to Coach Kim that he'd noticed the difference and the impact she had.
Wonder how Rickea would have adapted to this system?

for the same reason we get up and move to the couch from the chair, and if they begin to run, we switch back

I agree!

I know we have a super talented twin backcourt coming in, but we're realllly gonna miss Samara next season. If she leads us to a deep run in March, she'll be my favorite PG in LV basketball history.

If she was on this team, they'd be a serious contender to go all the way.
She IS on this team and her name is Cooper
Just like Rickea, that "switch" just hasn't been totally flipped yet
Once it gets fully flipped,,,you'll see the rebirth of Ms Jackson

Except for the “I thought both teams played ok” line. That’s a jab that Tennessee didn’t get UConns best.

Just maybe UCONN did not play its best because The LVs gave it their best. Just maybe the LV hustle and never give up attitude put UCONN off its game. Give credit where credit is due. Go Lady Vols, keep it up!!
People clearly dont watch the games lol...we still so undisciplined its crazy particularly in that 3rd quater uconn got lucky cuz it couldve got ugly we still beat ourselves im being nit picky cuz at this point we are who we are but people need to get a grip the team is legit and you gone have to beat us we had uconn completely gassed in the 4th...

Absolutely.

During that game, Rebecca Lobo mentioned UConn shot poorly against other teams they lost too - ND and USC - and those games were WITHOUT Azzi. So, that kinda makes sense vs other top five teams.

Prior to Thursday’s matchup though, they had 11 games vs inferior opponents to work her back in. So the fact that they didn’t shoot as well WITH Azzi back (which frees up Paige and others), is a testament to our defense and pace. Period.

When our team decides they want to defend, they’re very disruptive!

That is the best ball movement I’ve seen all year.

I agreed with your entire post, Chipper, but am quoting only this part because I keep forgetting to mention how impressed I was by the ball movement, specifically the zip they were all putting on passes. As you and I and everyone here has noticed in past games (and even worse in recent seasons), it is often frustrating to see so many lazy passes that are easy for opponents to steal. Thursday night most of our passes were noticeably more crisp. I kept thinking how glad I was to see it, and wondered aloud to friends if they'd worked specifically on that in the few days leading up to the game or if they simply were all just feeling super zippy at the same time.

And of course we had plenty of players taking it to the basket when we weren't zipping the ball around, but the balance of one-on-one drives/perimeter passing was just right to get us the win.

I'll go off that topic while I'm thinking of this to say that if the Lady Vols go down to LSU and give them an extremely rare home loss and then can somehow contain that damn Georgia Amoore and beat Kentucky, that would almost have to put Caldwell in any serious conversations about SEC Rookie COTY, wouldn't it? I think right now a lot of voters have Kenny Brooks penciled in, but I really think Kim has a good chance if we can beat those two teams. Well, I guess I should add that we should also not have a major slip-up against anyone well below us in SEC standings.

Can't wait until tomorrow.

If the LVs can get the win tomorrow, then win out in the SEC, there's a good chance our game against KY in Lexington will decide the coveted 4th place spot and double bye. Looking at the remaining sched, KY is going to pick up at least 3 losses, to LSU, TX, and SC. That would have us going into that game one game behind (assuming we don't lose again)plus the winner would have the tiebreak. IMO if that's the case, whichever coach wins that head to head should be the COY.

But it will be the lazy vote, it will be Dawn.
