Years ago, there was a wooden foot bridge at the end of our street connecting us to the next neighborhood. We had a lot of kids come trick or treating. Our house was always done up with lights and spiders and the headless bride (my missus’ creation). We would have seven to nine freehand carved jack-o-lanterns lit up along the path to our door. Kids would come by for hours. One lady drove her kids to our house, having heard about “the bride.”
Seven years ago, the walking bride became decrepit, and someone from the other neighborhood tore it down. Kids stopped coming onto our street. Our neighbors darkened their houses and had a potluck on Halloween (organized by a young woman who doesn’t like Halloween).
This past Spring, a new concrete ramp replaced the old wooden walking bridge. The kids will be coming back! The missus and I have decorated and bought candy to hand out. The young woman is campaigning hard to continue to darken the street’s houses and hold the potluck tonight. We’re putting a two-faced pumpkin on our driveway at the street. We’re letting ’em see that we’re giving out candy.
