Recruiting Football Talk VIII

I thought Nico looked better all game long.

He just finally hit a couple long shots 2nd half.

From Arky and UF I think he's made strides. Just settle in and chill and we can score 30+ from here on out. Which, with this defense, is a sizeable margin.
He had two more deep shots that looked accurate and weren't caught...the one to Squirrel where he jumped to catch it for some reason (like he always does) and one down the sidelines to Brazzell. I only remember two throws in the second half where he missed a wide open guy, so he's getting there. If he gets settled into the Kentucky game early, then this offense might never look back.

Yeah it's so tough.

Believe Henry was the last to do as an RB...and he averaged 148 yards a game. Sampson hasn't hit that mark in any game. Basically have to be an old school workhorse to get serious consideration, right or wrong.

But who knows. If the OL keeps progressing and completed deep shots open up space for the run game, maybe he turns it up a notch.
Still a long way to go. It was the 2nd half of the season that won Henry the Heisman. 200+ yards 4 times in a 6 game stretch, he was held under 100 yards 3 times in the first 6 weeks

Two things I'm interested to see if happens this week. Does Texas get punished for throwing things on the field? We all know we did for that OM game. And does Kirby get punished for criticizing the officiating? Sure, the refs sucked. Seems to be a common theme these days. But coaches are not supposed to criticize officiating. Pretty sure it's supposed to at least result in a fine. So does Kirby get punished or is he above the rules?

This was the throw that got me firmly back on the Nico train

That was an incredibly hard throw. Gaston Moore basically tried the same throw in his one attempt and it traveled half the distance into the arms of a Bama defender. Nico barely flicked it and it was perfect. If he starts hitting receivers like that on the regular he will win a Heisman.

For those that were clamoring for Gaston Moore to replace Nico🤣🤣

That one pass should end the discussion about the QB position.
I think those people are stupid...but one play does not mean Gaston is a scrub. We are lucky to have him, and one thing that play showed me...he ain't afraid...and in thus offense, that is a good thing.

Imo that's a mistake he doesn't make if he had been playing a lot.

So unfortunately I don't think Dylan Sampson will be in the Heisman discussion unless some things change.

We HAVE to win the SEC and be a top 4 seed in the playoffs and even then his production will need to increase (of course I believe to win the SEC that also needs to happen.

Why?

Ashton Jeanty, 126 carries for 1248 yards and 17 TDs (Boise State)
Bryson Daily, 138 carries for 909 yards and 19 TDs (Army)

Kaleb Johnson from Iowa is also having a great season, but they are already 4-3 so I think he'll be left out of the mix.

But I do think the best RB in the SEC will be in the discussion especially if on the team that wins the conference.

Travis Hunter will continue to be overhyped and Colorado has a legit shot to win the Big 12 or at least be in the title game...the teams left on their schedule all seem to be having down years except for Cincinnati.

I say overhyped because even though he plays both ways he's outside the top 15 in every major category for either WR or DB. 19th in receiving yards, 21st in receiving TDs. He has 19 total tackles and 2 INTs to go with that. He's a great player, but like a jack of all traits master of none a bit... and unlike Charles Woodson he doesn't play for Michigan and a big brand.

Rest of the finalist appear to be QBs... and quite a few are having great years on winning teams.

Cameron Ward, top 5 team in Miami...undefeated leads the nation in passing yards and passing TDs.
Dillon Gabriel, top 5 team in Oregon...undefeated leads the nation in completion %, 9th in yards and 15th in passing TDs
Shedeur Sanders, the Colorado hype train behind him they're 4-2 and he's putting up great stats 72.2%, 2268 passing yards (5th in nation) with 19 TDs (5th as well). Unless they manage to not lose another game I think at best him or Hunter gets in as a finalist and honestly a better case for him can be made IMO.
Cade Klubnik, top 10 team in Clemson 4th in nation in passing TDs and has only 3 INTs he's also averaging 5.5 a carry right now as well on 41 attempts

Also I'm sure Carson Beck will continue to be mentioned until Georgia loses a 2nd game...his TDs aren't as high as the other names mentioned and he's already thrown 8 INTs but it's Georgia.

East Carolina fired their coach yesterday. AD is ex UT administrator. May be one to keep an eye on for coming after Banks in the off season.

You pay Banks what it takes to wait for his opportunity to go to a major program similar to what Kirby did.

Very first play he breaks down is Simpson's fumble. I didn't realize how half-assed the TE did on that play. Someone mentioned it above and I had to check it out again. He's right, Sampson may still be running with a hustle play from the TE there.

I remember watching the game live and was wondering if Miles was throwing the game or something... a few times he just seemed to not be in the play at all.
