Recruiting Football Talk VIII

WCU ran out of gas on defense. NC State was in real trouble til that happened
I feel like they looked small too.

I also feel like I've seen a bunch of teams like NC State struggle like that and then look completely different the best week.

However, if they just could never block the Catamounts I don't know how they fix that...

ND ran a hellva year-long media campaign for Hornung. I wonder if it was the first. They had their schedule set up to play in about all of the biggest media markets and they hyped Hornung to those newswriters.

Majors' injury prolly kept him from winning, iirc. Distorted the stat comparison.

Majors is right that Brown should have been 1. Majors 2.

Hornung did well with the Packers. Lombardi built his offense around him.

Hornung is and always has been complete ass as a player and overrated as hell.

Dude missed an entire season in the NFL because he violated the league gambling policy, something that has kept Pete Rose out of the MLB HOF.

Hornung averaged 36 rushing yards a game for his entire career with the Packers he's only in the HOF because he played for Lombardi

NC State didnt look near as good as they thought they would.

They were down in thr 4th quarter and WCU's d-line had them on skates... it's going to be a bloodbath in Charlotte. Calling it. Horrible match up for them.

Their skull guys are good, but we may knock McCall out of the game like Slovis.
We should skill drag them.

Each game stands alone. I was at the Pitt game in 2022 where we could have put it away and didn’t. Pitt team goes 9-4, and we end up beating UF and Bama.
I’m talking about games inferior competition. If UTC puts up a bunch of points then it it safe to say that our defense isn’t as good as advertised.

Paul Hornung is the most undeserving Heisman winner to ever do it.

59 of 111 for 53.2% with 917 yards, 3 TDs and 13 INTs
94 carries for 420 yards and 6 TDs

This was on a Notre Dame team that finished 2-8 that year too (102nd of 111th teams)

Majors on a 10-1 Tennessee team should have gotten the nod for sure.
36 of 59 for 61% with 552 yards, 5 TDs and 3 INTs
108 carries for 549 yards and 7 TDs

Absolutely zero reason you hand that to Hornung, he shouldn't have even been in the top 5 finalist.
Horning was a poor passer. He had a 3-13 touchdown-interception ratio the year he won the Heisman! He threw an interception once every 8.5 passes. He was a really good running back.

He was a disappoint with Packers because they wanted him to throw and they somehow couldn't figure out what to do with him. That is, until Lombardi got there, put him at half back, and made the power sweep his signature play. Then he was lit.

Honestly of all the Vols Doug Atkins never even making top 10 in the Heisman race is the biggest screw job. Being he was a key reason we won National titles in '50 and '51 but it appears defensive stats weren't even tracked properly.
Defensive players can’t win the Heisman (except for that one other “only” time…).

What is it about Deion that gets your engine revving?
It’s more about affection for Colorado and how fun — and easy — it is to yank people’s chains about it. The whole country is obsessed. I’ve never gotten more comments when I wear CU gear in my life.

I agree. I tried to look up his Vols stats up yesterday and nada. Atkins was the best player in college football and should have won the Heisman.

Interesting story that he came to Tennessee as a basketball recruit, iirc. Neyland had a look at him and said "this is my guy." Neyland was right, of course. Atkins dominated in the NFL too.

I honestly think that was the plan..... But if I'm a head coach there's no way I want Deion around my franchise.

Deion will leave Colorado in worse place than he found it. That's saying something.
He'd be perfect at an FCS school........like where he was at JSU

I'll say this..................I'll take him at Austin Peay today.

I hope for your sake that coach prime is Colrado’s pruitt. Hopefully Colorado can fire him for cause, avoid a payout and then hire a real coach. They have had essentially decades of misery due to their inept athletic department.

Up until his hiring, I have rooted for Colorado. Except when they played Tennessee.
Their decades of misery are largely self-imposed. The university doesn’t care about football (or sports at all, really), and most of the institutional apparatus openly disdains intercollegiate athletics. At least they did when I was there. My advisor liked to brag about the role he played in killing Colorado football during Gary Barnett’s tenure.

I dont think its possible.

Before:
1-11
Worst power 4/5 program easily
no nil
empty stadium for decades
didnt have the money for his contract

After:
4-8 (still an improvement lol), currently 1-0
Crazy donations (nil & traditional)
Constantly selling out the stadium
Left the dying pac 12, and found a new home
Enrollment has skyrocketed
University has made crazy amount of 💰

Long- story short: colorado was literally rock bottom in every category imaginable with their football program, now they are in a better situation. If and when he leaves, they literally cant be worse off than they were before.

Travis Hunter already being pushed for Heisman Trophy. I personally don't care but thought it was interesting that a player on a team with a losing record at end of season would be in position to win the award.

Only one individual has every won the Heisman playing for losing team .
Paul Hornung almost made it two the year Johnny Majors won it.
