Recruiting Football Talk VIII

The way they finished the game? You mean after Western Carolina got tired in the 4th quarter and blew two scoring chances? Are we talking about the same team that beat UTC by 2 points last year? While also finishing with a worse record and placing 4th in the southern conference standings while UTC finished 2nd?
Right. If NC State makes it a game and we escape with a couple point margin of victory, then I think the season predictions will need to be reviewed.

The way NCSU finished their game is more important than the final score. They'll be better against us in Charlotte. They have very very solid pieces. McCall is a talented QB. Their RB really dominated towards the end of the game. Jolly is a playmaker. And their WR Concepcion is a baller. Our defense will certainly give them fits though.

Question is if their defense can contain us for 4 quarters and if Nico has the offense humming. Definitely need good reps tomorrow.
It was WCU. I'm not sure their defense can contain our O for four downs. Both of their lines looked trash, and their QB was less accurate than Guarantano. And again... That was against WCU's D line. Will he all of a sudden get accurate when he has no time?

I will be worried if we struggle against that team.

I'm definitely not going to overreact to that game. Obviously N.C. State didn't play their best game last night and overlooked WCU somewhat. Every team should get better from game to game. I believe Tennessee defeats N.C.State but not like some are dreaming of. 10 to 14 point win not 30.
Yeah, they're breaking in a lot of new pieces so it made sense that they'd have a speed bump

10-14 would be just fine.

They may drop out of the top25 after that. Definitely would if they didnt score the late TD.

I've seen teams play like crap then turn around and play like world beaters too many times to put any faith in them to play a poorly vs us. I'm just glad they started getting it going a little in the 4th, so we can see their tendencies and what they're trying to do offensively on the 2nd level.

Yep, that's honestly a best case for us. They can't play vanilla because they don't wanna lose the upset so we get to see a bit more of what they wanna do and they still win/pull away so won't drop in rankings.

Also Arkansas looking like they might be a team with a pulse this year. Was just a cupcake, but nearly 700 yards of offense and 70 points (most coming in the 1st half) is a big improvement over last year.

Their highest yards was 510 against FIU in fact 687 Total yards is now the most of any team Pittman's had there...

Yeah truthfully ND State is a better team (traditionally) than WCU. So Colorado with so much turnover having a close game wasn't as surprising as NC State struggling imo.

Yeah...NC State did not look like a top level team, they did start figuring it out in the fourth quarter.

But that's a Western Carolina team that's best season under Bell is 7-4 I figured they'd have a good showing though being a big stage against an in state team. Not sure I feel worried less by NC State, I'm a bit happy they held on so our game will be a top 25 battle though.
Felt like Vols 2016 against App State for a Thursday opener. Uber talented team with high expectations and looking ahead. They got smacked in the mouth and had to grind it out. A lot of people thought that was evidence the Vols were going to be trash that year.

You should change your name to "NotGoodTimeVol" 🙄🤣

Yeah their schedule is pretty tough.

at Nebraska
at Colorado State (you know that game is a big one for the Rams)
vs Baylor
at UCF
vs Kansas State
at Arizona
vs Cincinnati
at Texas Tech

Utah
at Kansas
vs OK State

Bold are the games I'd say they should win.
I would trade schedules in a heart beat. If we didn't go 12-0 against that I would be pissed.

Was at that game frustrating as hell some questionable officiating too (Reeves-Maybin getting ejected for a BS targeting on a punt return. Was a wakeup call to that team, Butch be damned they were playing for Atlanta right up until blowing it to South Carolina.

But I think that season specifically despite being 9-4 when the dust settles was the obvious "Butch ain't it" reveal. App State struggle, complete no-show at A&M until the 4th quarter, losing at South Carolina with everything on the table, then losing at Vandy with a chance for the Sugar Bowl... yeah writing was on the wall that year.

Travis Hunter already being pushed for Heisman Trophy. I personally don't care but thought it was interesting that a player on a team with a losing record at end of season would be in position to win the award.

Only one individual has every won the Heisman playing for losing team .
Another one of those “only”s that conveniently exists at the expense of a more deserving Tennessee player.

Oddly enough they play 5 top 25 teams and we only play 4... but we have 2 top 5 teams on our schedule and OU most likely is top 10 when that game happens if they are still undefeated.

Hypothetically...cause I won't believe it until I see it.

What sort of numbers do you think would get James Pearce Jr. a Heisman?

I think he'd need 60 combined tackles, with 30+ being Solo, and pushing 20 TFLs with 14 or more sacks.

I think 20 sacks probably locks it up as that would tie the single season record and if he's that disruptive Vols are in the playoffs too.

I think he would need 20 sacks. And some of them would have to be in big games.

I also think that guy Travis Hunter is going to play spoiler.
